A Day (or two) in the Life of Benita

... tucked into their beds. I made a cup of tea, grabbed my book and headed out to the porch to just soak in some Vitamin D!
Greg eventually ambles his way out to my haven and asks me if I've had breakfast, he invites me to go out with him to catch some food. Which here, usually means a chocolate croissant. But I'm not arguing!
Greg asks me if I want to go see the beach, and I defer to him, even though I have been aching to see the sea, and just the ...

Back to the Roots

I wish I could draw. Because then I could show you the exact expressions around me, the face that Greg makes when he's telling a joke, that exact expression that reminds me so much of my Nonno (grandfather) it almost hurts, and it makes me laugh, then I get funny looks as no one understands what I find so funny.
I would depict for you how the sun shines, so brightly here in the mornings, reflecting life ...

San Giorgio Morgeto

... in the motherland. San Giorgio Morgeto is a quiet village on the side of a mountain in the Aspromonte National Park. Although it is a town of about 3,000 people, they all seem like family. It was amazing to walk the streets and not only get a very pleasant 'Buon giorno' from people, but on a number of occasions we were asked in to peoples homes for coffee, a glass of wine, lunch, and even some grappa. It was wonderful hospitality. We saw a ...

The Deep South (of Italy)

... she's settled in quite nicely. I had asked her to keep some time free to travel with me to Sicily to meet my (her) relatives, so this entry is the first part of the trip where we travel down through southern Italy on our way to Sicily. Giuliana and I set off south and as you would know by now I generally have no particular plan or agenda. My cousin Gianluca has recommended we visit the Tremiti islands about 2/3rds of the way down Italy's Adriatic coast but we miss the ...

Tropea - I had no idea!

Tropea is a seaside town that is not really on the international tourist circuit. However it is a tourist hot spot for Italians. Gianluca recommended that we go there so Dad and I stopped there on the way down to Sicily. It was absolutely incredible! The water was crystal clear blue, the beaches covered in soft white sand and there was a rock shelf that you could jump off into the water ...

The Italian language

... in Italy's lyrical vernacular. The new language grew steadily in importance, mainly perpetuated by life in the burghs and it was in this type of cultural background that the ideas and poetry of Dante blossomed, who wrote the first ever work of poetry in the Florentine vernacular, the marvellous Divina Commedia (Divine Comedy ...

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

... would help in the Hunt for the La Praia Hotel. Based on the scrap of map that was provided in the printout we first search the area by the sea and after a series of deep 180 turns heading downhill we reached the sea area of Tropea only to find that alas, no La Praia Hotel was located there. We did manage to find a nice marina and a scary camping ground though. So back up the hill and into the town itself and after an ...

With the family in CALABRIA! Sant'Onofrio & more
