... so kindly alluded to in his recent blog entry) and I'm bringing one myself when i leave THIS FRIDAY! There's still so much to do. I finally found a portable steamer so I don't have to iron clothes (least favorite chore) and converted some dollars to pounds so i can buy groceries to cook with my first few days (most favorite chore). Opened up a travel card so I can earn miles towards future trips ;) and stacked up on some more literature so I can be well versed on everything ...

Punta Cana is full of Europeans and North Americans playing
golf, baking in the sun, stuffing themselves on hotel buffets, and taking bus
day trips on all-inclusive packages. I saw some of those tour buses at the
basilica in Higuey and even driving through the sugarcane fields and felt so
glad to be in my own car rather than on a package tour.

... people in the countryside still get around on horseback and quite a few horses were tethered in town. Outside of town stands the home of Ponce de Leon, seeker of the Fountain of Youth and explorer and namer of Florida, who was also governor of the Higuey region for the Spanish crown. I couldn’t come to an agreement on price with the attendant who was clearly trying to riff me off, so I didn’t go inside. The guidebooks indicate the interior displays are pretty sparse anyway, ...
