... during World War Two. Fortunately they never saw much action, with the only gun fired directed at an American ship that had failed to identify itself. ... the broad walk and watched this beautiful little creatures make their way up to their nests. They were chatty little fellas and I just loved watching their little waddle up the hill. Shame I couldn't take one of them home either, unfortunately you aren't able to take photos here in order to protect the birds, but take our word for it - brilliant! Mother Nature has been good to us this holiday! Thank you! Next stop.....Cairns (and warmth I hope!) ...

Cairns town centre is well suited for backpackers, it's busy and built up and people are on the sell. There are plenty of places to eat but too many souvenir shops for our liking. The ocean view and mud beach are far from spectacular (as all the good beaches are a bus ride away to the north), soon on our 3rd day we head off in search of the golden sands.
