We saw one guy who as punishment for something was shot in the hand, and in one of the streets he showed us the bullet holes from a 'disagreement' that had happened previously, pretty sobering stuff. Needless to say, that colored out feelings about it and made us feel less secure to the point where we stopped carrying purses at all and just hid everything in our bras. ... metro to Botafogo station and from there walked to the entrance to Sugarloaf Mountain. We got slightly lost along the way - an apparently 15 minute walk from the station turned into about an hour once we took a wrong turning and had to grab a taxi - but we got there! After only a five minute wait we were on the cable car up to the top of the mountain. We'd managed to catch the sunset again, and the views were spectacular!
