Buenos Aires

... I took a short bus ride to the capital. As soon as I got off the bus, I was smacked in the face by the intense smog of the city. I've been in many big cities, but for some reason the pollution here seems more intense. After catching my breath, I took a taxi to my hosts, Mariela and Juan. I hosted Mariela in New York a few months ago, and it was great to see her again. My travel partner Julian from Germany and I stayed ...

Don't cry for me Argentina!

... I'm some kind of VIP. Naturally I felt like a big fat fraud but kept tight-lipped. Which I didn’t, of course, I gibbered happily like a baboon as is my way. We were swiftly ushered up to our beautiful suite after a tour of the hotel. “This is where the royal family hosted their parties in the early part of the twentieth century,” our butler informed us, “this is the private art ...

Day 8 - Buenos Aires - Tigre

... the constant screams as we made our way around the market.

We jumped onto a catamaran for the 90minute tourist trip around the canals and waterways, passing by heaps of holiday homes, mostly uninhabited for this time of year but obviously belonging to wealthy owners. We also passed the once owned house of Argentinian President Domingo Sarmiento, which was caged in glass in order to preserve it. I was impressed by the number of ...

... of the larger parks close by. Unfortunately, I had a pretty big trip and fell and bruised and scraped my left arm pretty badly but thankfully I didn't break anything. All in all being in Buenos Aires was a great way to end my trip and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in the States once I get back. Thanks for reading my travel blog.

... the hostel could do anything until evening. To be easy on ourselves we went out to a classy old wood panelled bar to see a tango show. I loved the music, it´s all angles and friction. It was an ensemble of violin, accordian, piano and bass characterised by a disciplined mania. The violin played wild lines up and above the neck of the violin, the accordion kept the changing tempos swinging and a guy with a big grey mustache played the piano like ...

Last week in South America!

... Brazilian, Uruguayan, Argentine, and British...this hostel had the most South Americans than any other place I have stayed!) and staying up till 4 am with my new friends (again...it is impossible to be anti-social here!!) My last day was spent running around BA, trying to finish my holiday shopping, see a few things I hadn't seen before (I had missed a few markets!), and visiting some of my favorite places again! Went to the Museum of Belles Arts, which had a ...

... a good authentic Argentinean "Irish Band"), food stalls & hundreds of bric-a-brac stalls. In the evening the locals were supposed to tango in the Plaza but it rained so the only tango dancing was done by a man with a female dummy - he was quite funny. There were dozens of posters stalls, the most popular posters by far, were of Maradona doing his "Hand of God" leap, The Beatles (but with Paul McCartney as he is now, superimposed on old classic photos) & of course, Evita.

... lined with stores selling absolute ****. The only difference is that while the dreadful part of Powell only goes on for a block or two, Avenida Florida goes on for about 8 blocks. Like SF, however, at the end of Avenida Florida, there is a really nice shopping mall. We went in and had some ice cream at a branch of our favorite ice cream place, Freddo. We only spent a brief time looking around the mall because it was pretty ...
