Sunday - Arriving in Kolkata (Calcutta)

... breezeways, large fans, clean bedrooms, etc. This is the same place the team stayed in 2007 so it was cool imagining them there, walking the halls, meeting around the table, etc.

We had arranged to go out later in the evening with Christopher to his church and then on to the dump, but Tom, Heather and Alanna all fell into a deep sleep and could not be aroused. Mar and Christopher decided to postpone the plans until another time, and just talked instead.

... re in a Slump, you're not in for much fun. (feeling **** with a fever) Un-slumping yourself is not easily done. You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked. (general sleeper compartment) A place you could sprain both you elbow and chin! Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in? (making decisions) How much can you lose? How much can you ...

The Best of All Possible Birthdays

... and all of the love that has carried us, into our hearts. It is to let that Presence sit in us and speak to us, to let it in-form us, in ways that are beyond language and beyond knowing. To dwell in God is to invite the Presence of Grace that is already here in to stay. And to let it wash everything else away. Then I had the faintest glimmering of a vision of who Baba Lokenath is: the immense, Eternal, Unchangeable Presence who stands behind Baba, the ...

... was soothing. Mud flats and sand dunes were full of crabs of many shapes and size. It was a beautiful morning. Scene of fisherman throwing his net standing in water was if a painting by an artist. As we were planing to leave Dobanki, there was a commotion. We heard that a tiger had entered the village of Hemnagar. The forest officials were rushing to Hemnagar in their speedboats. We followed them. When we reached Hemnagar, the "operation caging tiger was over". The tiger was ...

One does ask the question of why Maradonna has visited India, let alone Kolkata, in a nation dominated by cricket and very few recognised football stadiums?!?! Still, it didn't stop the city going barking mad with all the press talking about who was the greatest player ever...Pele, Maradonna, or Kruyf.... they seemed to have missed out good ole Georgie Best in the equation!! Our waiter was not going to take our order as he assured us that it was "dry" and we needed "gravy". We stood our ground and had a very nice dinner with steamed veggies on the side. The restaurant does not serve coffee or tea after dinner....imagine that? It is a bit hard to get a taxi back home as the drivers are not listening to ...

... he also did this in my room), and honey. It was delicious. I was worried it make me sick to my stomach, but all is well today. So it could be the Indian tea or the drugs that helped turn things around, but it's more fun to think that it was the tea. I was only able to take the drugs with foreign writing on it from some doctor who came to my room, and from the chemists (what they call a pharmacy here) that I never saw after a pep talk from ...

... all over the place with bricks and rocks and whatever else might be conceived of used for wickets. Quite a relaxing little oasis in the middle of a big city. Speaking of Foot: I always wondered if it actually really hurt if your foot got run over by a vehicle. Well, the answer is yes. Some of the smaller streets here are nuts, wide enough for one car at a time, jammed with 20 in either direction, all honking, then throw in pedestrians, dogs (no cows ...

... locals and was an immediate target for the same three questions I am always asked, "what is your country?, what is your religion? and what is your business in bangladesh?" My reply to the third question often draws a much needed blank stare, as Bangladeshis cannot fathom how I can possibly be working for free in a part of their own country they have never heard of. This blank stare is the freedom to continue about my way without further distractions. I ...
