... supportive and keep making sure I have everything I need or if there is anything they can help with. I feel I have built on the skills I already had and have gained some new ones - Who said ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’!! I rather enjoy just being able to walk across the road to catch the bus. Means there’s no real time pressure in the morning because they run very frequently during morning peak so if I miss one ...

Farewell to Stoke!

... by 9.30 but about 9.50 I realised that I was stalling: the huge reality of the situation was causing me to shy away and dither rather than taking action - it was probably behind my stomach cramps too. :-)

This was not really a surprise - the North Staffs (and South Cheshire) region has been my primary area of residence for 10 of the last 12 years, and is the only place I have lived where ...

Day 2 - The Reamer

How could anything be worse than the Ball Breaker? How? And yet it was. Damn the kilometres of bog, damn the no bacon butty truck on the highway, damn the twisty part where you go around curve after curve after curve and don’t see anything ahead of you but CURVE. Then damn the “ ...

Day 1 - The Ball Breaker

... I was walking on. They’d paved the path with boulders?! On purpose?!

This was when my leg started coming out of its socket.

The Greedy Sheep Incident

Pennine sheep are in some parts greedy having been feed by walkers they rather expect food now. They will sneak up behind you but if you wave a stick they kind of run away and wait for you to stop paying attention again. I asked Ryan (remorseless *******) to watch ...

Last day in Warrington!

... ice cream for dessert. We tried to find sparklers to make it a traditional American 4th of July celebration, but it is illegal to purchase fireworks in England. So no sparklers for us. :( We played Family Fortune (which is like Family Feud) and talked about our week here and the coming weeks. Everyone offered advice and suggestions for the weeks ahead and wished us well! I cannot ...

The day before...

... my voice and have an awful cough. Never mind, the sun will sort all that out!! Temperatures are starting to get back to 'normal' in southern Europe now after the heatwave, the forecast for Florence is now just the mid 30s instead of 40 odd..... Rome is looking good too, although the sun index is 8, argh, better get that factor 25 packed.....

Preparing to leave Warrington again!

... Jacki wishing us Happy New Year, as it had just struck midnight in Aussie, so Gail had a nice old chat as we continued on our way north. Mid afternoon the heavens opened up, and it belted down for the next couple of hours, and although it was only about 3.30pm, it looked as dark as midnight, however by taking our time we made it back to Warrington some time after 5.00pm. It had been a long and tiring drive. New Years night was spent having a ...

A journey back in time.

... something Gail and I were very interested in as we have always been avid bush walkers back in Australia, but have never visited the various overseas and exotic locations that Dee & Tony had been to. They talked of their next walking adventure in January 2007 to Portugal, and Gail and I are both so sorry we met them too late to go along with them as the tour is now fully booked. It is sure to be a great experience, and with Susan & Peter also going along, it will be one great adventure ...

Revisiting old memories, and places past.

... picked up a few books on how Warrington would have been back in the fifties. These are very much appreciated and we are really touched at the efforts he has made to make us feel at home. Also Dee had found some letters that had been written by Brian's Mum to her mother Emma back in the sixties which she told Brian he could keep. Brian was very touched and I think he even had a tear in his eye. Time for bed and a much needed rest as we will be leaving tomorrow and there is still much to do.
