We ended up finding out that our car was quite seriously damaged and until they stripped it all down they were as wise as we were, but the repairs would probably go into next week at the earliest. We'd used online check-in so all we had to do was drop our bags and pick up our boarding pass. We stood there waiting for something else to go wrong while the lady processed our flight.
