We continue to make our way east, next stop the Upper Peninsula of the state of Michigan to the city of Marquette. The population was 21,355 at the 2010 census, making it the most populated city of the UP. Note: the entire UP only has a little over 311,000 residence. Marquette is a major port on Lake Superior, primarily for shipping iron ore (see picture below of train dock), and is the home of Northern Michigan University. In town we saw T- shirts and signs with "Yooper" ...

A few miles into Michigan means EST, but at least Michigan roads are better that WI and MN! Thunderstorms here definitely get our attention..and rain!!! Yikes...puts Oregon to shame! The Northern Calumet and Keweenaw Peninsula revealed the first hint of fall colors on the tree-canopy over Hwy 26. Log trucks were loaded with maple ...

When we finished, I visited the little shop for a possible souvenir or two . . . and I found some--a t-shirt for me and a stone ...

... stop here again!! I took some pictures of the place, then moved on. We first stopped at this restaurant when we took Celeste (our younger daughter) to band camp at Northern Michigan University in Marquette--when she was between her Sophomore and Junior years in high school. And, as I write this she had her 42nd birthday yesterday!!

There are no Tim Horton's in this part of the territory so one has to really rough it with McDonald's Coffee if you need ...

... Hemisphere , 5 miles long. Saturday morning we left overcast Winnipeg and headed south to the Emersion US border crossing into North Dakota traveling south to Grand Forks before heading east to Thief River Falls, Minnesota, onward to Duluth and into Superior, Wisconsin. I was expecting a different landscape, but it looked exactly like the prairies and I have never been on so many straight roads that you can see at least 20 kms ahead before you might come upon a slight curve. ...
