On my own today......

The sun is out, the birds are singing, my sister is sick in bed............... Sadly, our first day in London, didn't quite turn out as I hoped. My sister caught a touch of the nasty stomach bug that was passed on by her boys last week. So, Lesley spent the day in bed and I spent the day on my own. After a quick shower, I was out and about on my first solo trip navigating the streets of London. I started by taking a lovely morning stroll along the Southbank of the River Thames past Gabriels W...

After the predicted hectic day traveling back and forth between home and the airport I was settling in to my seat on the Qantas A330 for the flight to Singapore. Check-in had gone relatively quickly and smooth for Perth International and so I had enjoyed some time to chill with Charles and Mum before passing through Customs and security. As I sat on the plane and other passengers boarded the seat next to me remained empty. I began to feel hopeful and, sure enough, when we started pushing back...

The Garbagemen of Jersey

... 4 bins and sometimes 5. The truck is able to handle two bins at a time and as I watch, the men put on the garbage bin and the paper bin and the truck lifts them up and dumps them, exactly into the same location. Next comes the bottle bin and the plastic bin and sure enough, the truck dumps them exactly in the same location. Finally the last two bins, cans and trash, are picked up and dumped exactly in the same location. The two workers then ...

Pingyao, Louyang and the Silk Road

... We had almost finished and had had our fill, but somehow had managed to order the same meal again! We managed to cancel the second order, much to the consternation of the confused waitress! Our last supper in Kashgar was a hot-pot affair. We sat outside at a pavement cafe and cooked meat and vegetable kebabs in a pot of boiling water laced with chillies and spices. We washed this down with beer and taught the waiters to say "cheers"! It was a great night ...

ENGLAND, IRELAND, SCOTLAND TALES

... We spent a week in Southport, with Laura as our trusty tour guide. We ate fish and chips on the boardwalk by the lake, seagulls circling overhead in the grey skies, and drank pints in what is supposed to be Britains smallest pub. Packing picnic supplies, we took a day trip to the gorgeous Lakes District in the north-west of England. However, a pit stop at a little town for hot chocolate, scones and ...

Save a Penny for the Ferryman

... a 6 hour and a half hour ferry ride to the UK. I feel a bit sad that my holiday is coming to a close but also looking forward to getting back home. I decide to pay to watch a movie - Ironman that Norbs had told me about, its pretty cool for a comic book movie and then find the joys of joys the ship has wireless internet, not free mind you but nonetheless entertainment for me and a chance to update my blog. Wish you were here - Penny

An old church, a pile of stones and a bath tub

... body part was marked so it would be identified later. During festivals, the bones were taken out and ancestors represented by their disjointed bones joined in the celebrations. Weird. The toolkit consisted of a stone, the antler of a stag and the shoulder blade of an ox. The construction was done in 3 stages. Stonehenge I dates back to around 3050 BC based on carbon dated bone fragments. The neolithic people dug a circular ditch about 30 feet deep, then used the rubble to build ...

London Calling

... on our floor I had to go down 2 floors to find a shower that wasn't icy cold. Honestly avoid this hostel at all costs!! For dinner we thought we'd treat them to a traditional English meal so we went to Brick Lane for a Bengali Curry. Curry is the national dish if you didn't know and Brick Lane is full of Bangladeshis' and as a result good food. It was black and rainy by the time we got to Aldgate Station and had to walk miles until we finally found Brick Lane and ...

Arriving in a new world

... be so green and lush as it did not stop raining off and on since we arrivied. Everyone seems to be in quite a hurry in such a busy city. I could spend hours just watching people run back and forth between here and there. When we were sitting in Trafalgars Square, we could see tour buses prowling the outskirts beofre spewing out their paying customers onto the streets. They flow across the square like ants in search of a ...
