Historical Traveler Reviews of Travelodge London City Road
Staff don't care
from adysimmo
I wouldn't reommend this hotel to anyone. The attitude of the staff whenever there was a problem was at best casual.No-one seemed to care that the customer service was disgraceful. I know it is travelodge but for £70 a night you expect certain standards.
The room and hotel was generally very clean but it is all so basic. Our room didn't even have a sofa in it.
We stayed over a weekend and could not find anywhere to have a drink in the vicinity of the hotel. We ended up in the hotel bar which didn't have any clean tables and service was very slow.
I would not reccomend this hotel unless you WANT to be complaining all the time, which let's face it, when you can pay up to £95 a night, you don't want to be doing.
A good London base!
from DPJones
For £49.00 per night I don't think you can go too far wrong especially in London. It is clean, new, breakfast was good value as we were staying with two children and they ate for free and it was all cooked well, I think they have got over the teething issues mentioned earlier. The rooms are typical Travelodge, not too big but everything you want is there especially for a London break, using it purely as a base. Yes it is noisy at night as it is on the City Road which does not go to a ghost town but hey, after hectic days out in London we all slept well on the four nights we were there and even the transferral between bookings, we made one for 3 nights and a subsequent one for 1 night all went smoothly, we did not have to change rooms or anything. Cannot fault it really given the price and the location. We would stay there again. Have been a lurker on this site for while using the details provided so decided to give something back this time, in addition highly recommend Wagamamma for anyone with a family for food!
Too noisy.
from mainholm
We stayed for two nights on the second floor at the front and 3 of the 4 of us hardly slept the first night because of traffic noise. We asked for a room change several times but none was forthcoming.
We've stayed in central London many times, and this is the first time the noise has kept my kids awake. We even had to return their in the afternoon for them to sleep, a first. It spoiled a short break.
OK, it's cheap and clean, but I wouldn't risk going back.
The description on the Travelodge site now says some of the rooms are noisy, but it didn't at the time I booked it.
Good value base in central London
from Minky99
This Travelodge only opened recently and still smells new - it's very clean as you would expect. Rooms are fine and quite comfortable although if I'm being fussy the bed was a bit soft for my liking. Our room had secondary glazing but faced a couple of bars (on the corner of Tabernacle Rd) and it was quite noisy late at night although it wasn't so bad as to stop me sleeping.
The location is good, walking distance of St Paul's and the river and just a few minutes from Moorgate tube station (as someone else mentioned, Moorgate is more convenient than Old St - it's in a nicer area as well) on the Northern Line.
We didn't have any trouble with the lifts or use the bar/restaurant as referred to in previous posts - although the City practically shuts down at weekends (except for the bars immediately opposite!) it's easy to find places to eat/drink not too far away (Borough, Spitalfields and Farringdon for example).
The main drawback we found was the lack of a left luggage facility, we ended up leaving our bags at Euston which was expensive and inconvient. Otherwise this was a good value place to stay in central London and I'd stay there again.
OK
from Theloo
Stayed for three nights.
The travelodge is quite new from what I understand. It was clean in every aspect that you would expect of a new establishment.
We were allocated a room on the second floor facing the busy City Road. Despite the window being double glazed, the noise of the traffic continued through the night and the early hours of the morning.
Despite being booked in for three days, we had to reactivate our keycard every day which was a little annoying.
As for breakfast, there was a queue to be seated with an average wait
of fifteen minutes. Breakfast was nice apart from the fact that the hot food was cold.
I suppose as I did not pay the published rate of £95 per night., it was okay. I would have been a little upset if I was to pay the full rate.
Fix the breakfast and make money

NO one can complain about the advance pricing policy here, £49 per night or even £26 if you are able to book well in advance.
the fact that the hotel opened on 1st October means that everything is still new and clean - very pleaant.
Everything is basic so dont go looking for much.
the saddest part was the breakfats for which we both parted with £9.
The bacon is not cooked well, and covered in the white slimy stuff which usually means is has been pumped full of water.
The Scambled eggs were dry, totally dry. I cannot imagine how that happened unless it was not real eggs.
The sausages had been cooked to death and tasted like bread, but not like sausages, bad texture.
the mushrooms seemed partly raw.
the baked beans and the canned tomotoes were good.... well they do not need to be cooked.
No one in the hotel has bother to set the toasters....; the resulkt is that if you put your bread through twice, you will manag to get one side toasted.
Does no one at Travelodge care enough to fix these things? so simple, and no expense involved to get a much better result.
Really cheap
from WLDGlasgow
Just stayed for 2 nights at the travelodge London City Road with my husband and some friends. We booked it for its location as we were going to a party approx 0.5 miles away. It was a real bargain at £26 per room per night. It is a travelodge and therefore we were expecting basic accomodation which is what it is but it was in a great location between Moorgate and Old St tube stations, very clean and at that price I couldn't complain about it too much.
On the negative side it is a brand new hotel and obviously was having some teething problems - the worst of which meant when we woke up on Sunday morning there was no water. All the rooms were in the same position and so we couldn't have a shower or use the toilet - this continued until we had to check out. Obviously really inconvenient but we were automatically refunded for that night's stay and the reception staff were very apologetic.
The only other thing I would say is that although they have a good bar and restaurant it was extremely busy with slow service.
Despite the above I would saty here again, you couldn't beat it for value at £26 a night!
OK hotel
from eurogaltng
The hotel was nice enough and clean and the location was good but I wouldn't stay there again for the following reasons:
You can't check out and leave your baggage there for a few hours while waiting for your flight, so I had to leave my luggage at Kings Cross which not only lost me a lot of time which could've been spent sightseeing or doing other stuff but it also isn't cheap. We asked them if we could pay extra and keep the room for an extra few hours so we would leave our stuff there while waiting for our flight and they wouldn't let us do that either. Also, they say if you need a hairdryer you can get one at reception but they obviously don't have enough coz we asked every day and not one day could they give us one. Also, we found it strange that there was no phone in the room and we would've needed one. Most days atleast 1 of the 3 elevators were broken.
OK Hotel a bit bare
from JOHN_TAIN
Well we stayed at the london city travelodge on the 11th October till the 13th. First impression was a nice clean hotel and reception was nice and clean. All be it we waited 30 mins in a queue at 10-30 pm . we did have a wee problem finding the hotel at first. as a recommendation its best you get off at Moorgate Not oldstreet as its probably easier to find from Moorgate.
The room was quite bare to say the least. the only real nice feature was the flat screen TV. Apart from that there was nothing. The windows are nice and big but if your like my partner whos quite short at 5foot 6 she couldnt see outside as half the window was blocked by a outside wall. But och in the end we found the hotel to just be somewere to rest your head for a night and it was certainly adequate. The bar cafe was very nice , but get there early or everything dissapears.
The only other slight problem was it has 3 lifts 2 of which were broken and 1 which broke that same day. so there are obviously still some teething problems.
Nice central location as well and if you can get a cheap saver deal it makes the stay well worth it.
Over all impression. A good budget hotel . Try and get a saver deal to make it worth while ! but yes overall would stay again if we need a central location and good value.
The New Generation Travelodge
from Lethal1981
Well this is the first new style Travelodge ready for the London Olympics.
Was nice to stay at one of their hotels and it be modern and clean. So many are now in need of refurbishment.
Location
Excellent location between Old Street and Moorgate tube stations. If you go to Moorgate and turn right out of the station towards M&S on the right-hand side of the road you will see the Travelodge straight ahead of you.
Rooms
Nice big windows make the rooms feel big and airy. Roller blinds on the windows.
The sofa bed is all red now instead of blue and the wood is light beech. The Quilt is plain white instead of the awful blue check!
There is also a flat screen TV. Bathroom basic but clean and functional.
Downside
We spent the day in London and wanted to leave our bags - no facility so had to go to Euston and pay to leave them!
Upside
It cost £26 to stay here booking on their website in advance - this is fantastic value in such a central location. Will stay here every time I visit London if I get a deal like this.
