Halloween & a new travel companion!

After a six hour drive north from Fernie we found ourselves back in Alberta and within the city of Edmonton, home of the mighty Oilers hockey team, the largest mall in Canada and not a whole lot more. After such a lengthy drive it was a relief to find the GO backpackers hostel clean, friendly and well appointed with all the facilities we needed. We were to stay in the hostel for 2 nights before moving to the Travelodge down the road, where we would be joined by Kristina’s mother...

Fort Edmonton Historic Park

Today is a semi down day. We did laundry this morning, and Jim got a much needed haircut. We then headed to Fort Edmonton Park. This is the largest of Canada's living history parks. It depicts Canada in four historical eras: the fur trade of the mid 1800s, 1885, 1905, and 1920. We have seen several of the fur trade "forts" this summer and last. This one was ...

Hostel Characters

... into work tonight he was dressed up in a full length suit with a fedora.  His ambition since he dropped out of university is to become a fictional writer.  He is currently working on a book about 13th century Spain just before it defeats Muslim lead Granada.  He is also missing several teeth due to smoking and he is only 24 years old.  So these are the people of Hi Edmonton.  Compared to their stories my day touring was uneventful but I will write about that in my next blog.

Edmonton - Long lost sister ...

... for 2 nights where we visited my favourite lake, Lake Moraine - photos are pretty speccy! (see separate entry for Canadian Rockies). Also saw Lake Louise a bit later but I preferred Lake Moraine as it was minus the massive Chateau that ruins Lake Louise (just my humble opinion). Did hear an avalanche at Lake Louise so that was pretty cool. Piccy's speak for themselves. Lost count of the black bears we saw along the road (Gill ...

... in the Spring time. I have never been to Europe in the Spring and I am sure it will have a much different feel to it than my typical fall visits. My planned itinerary is to leave Edmonton on May 7th and fly to Toronto on Westjet 196. Then take Lufthansa 473 to Dusseldorf then finally Lufthansa 3280 to Prague on the morning of May 8th. I will spend the first night in Prague ...

BIG MALL!!

... that I was ok for another hour and they'd just ask me to give the stool up when it got busy. It got busy but they never asked me for the stool, awesome, I got to sit at the bar all night whilst everyone else stood. Even the few times I left to go to the toilet my pint and stool where still there unoccupied, except once but the kid (student) was really apologetic. Why is it I can go into some places and develop instant 'regular' status, answers on a ...

Celebrating Success and a Personal Best

... I challenge my comfort zones and become curious as to my limits. I will admit that it takes me some hard focus and mental conditioning to convince my conscious mind to go there. It is most definitely harder to go to that place when at home. I notice that when I travel, this attitude flows freely. One more reason I advocate travel so passionately. (Interesting thing I noticed today's date....it's Friday the 13th which means pretty much nothing to me. But it is also ...

The best laid plans...

Wow. It's been a long day. First, a big thank you for everyone's good wishes before I left. It does a guy good to know that people are thinking good thoughts for him. It's been about 24 hours since I left Edmonton and I'm tired and hungry, so this may be a short entry. Interesting, but short. After flying to Montreal and chatting with the young New Brunswicker beside me, and a painless plane change, it seemed that everything was ...

This Time, I'm Going Left Around the World

In a mere 14 hours, I am flying to Saigon! I'm pretty excited. This trip is going to have a lot of personal firsts: It will be the first time I fly across the Pacific Ocean. It will be my first time in the 'Orient.' The third personal first is already past-tense: it's the first time I've spent so much money before leaving home. If it doesn't cost a lot for me to be there, it sure costs something to get there. Here's a bit of a breakdown: Flight to Saigon and back home: $1477 ...
