        ... was the cruzeiro (later becoming the cruzado before becoming the Real used today), and people were happy to be able to afford an iron or other small electronic device paid out over 18 months!! There were many, many very poor people, especially children, in the streets and the divide between the extremely wealthy on one hand and the dirt poor on the other was evident everywhere one looked.

        ... and get us in without queueing. We leave our spot in the queue we've worked so hard for, to stand as close tot he bouncers as possible. They only want to let one person in at a time. I can't understand why. Lou goes in, jumping the queue and tells us to wait for the bouncers to say we can too.         We went to explore the city today. We hadn't heard much about the place and didn't know what to expect. So we headed to tourist information at the 'historic district' in the city centre using the metro, which is much cleaner and more comfortable than the London Underground!
