The bus to Hue

The bus trip was nothing special, but the big ships on the beach gave me some impression of the power of the last taifun. Just some days before the taifun hit the coast of central Vietnam. Hoi An was flooded, lot's of trees lay knocked down along the country side. A couple of big ships are spoiled on the beach. Like the one which I saw at Da Nang.

Daytrip to the sightseeing hot spots of Hue

Yes, Hue is nice. The daytrip gave me a good overview of the best places. The old palace has some similarities to the forbidden city in Beijing. Later we went to the famous Thien Mu pagoda and some good preserved, ancient tombs.

Sleeper Bus to Hue, god bless valium.

We boarded the sleeper bus (first time I've heard of a bus with beds let alone been on one) last night. At first I thought '****ING HELL' this will be torture. The beds were small, I could just fit in but G was too big and had to sit upright rather than lay down. The Vietnamese version of Xfactor was blaring out the speakers, a over the top Chinese Kung Fu film on the tele, the bus was going at an alarming speed swerving all over the bumpy road with the drivers hand constantly on the horn so ...

Fear and Loathing on the Bus to Hue

When we booked our Halong Bay trip in Hanoi we also booked an open bus ticket. We had sleeper tickets which would take us to Hue, Hoi An, Nah Trang, and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). To save time our bus was going to pick us up only an hour and a half after we arrived back from Halong Bay. Just enough time to get some food.

We were nervous about getting the bus which would drive to Hue for 14 hours through the night. Our experience on the mini bus to and from Halong Bay (during which Dave...

Rain rain and more rain

Hue was incredubly wet. The first time it had really rained non stop throughout the day!! Even though I was petrified, I agreed to go on a motorbike tour to see how the vietnamese hats are made, how incense is made and the paddy field. Was actually really good fun, although my bike broke down so I had to go on the back of another bike for a little ...

Stopped by Typhoon Ketsana in Vietnam.

... Hanoi. The biggest city between Nha Trang and hanoi was Hue. On CNN we saw that was hit the hardest by Ketsana as it made landfall there. We would see, there were 140.000 people evacuated and a lot of water as we could see. The train left...we are going.!!

In our coach was also a very old Vietnamese lady and her daughter. Very busy talking and eating, but no English at all. Rebecca was a student from Maine, USA. A nice chubby girl who travelled alreadt a lot for ...

Motorbiking around Hue countryside

... on Trip advisor that these guys hang bout there & recognised the name. I asked for Quy & they called him!

Went out of town to a lookout that had a big Us bunker from the war & looked over the pretty Perfume River. There was an attractive pagoda on the river with nice views over the river, we followed the ...

Really long and arduous one.

... with Jonathon. We cruised out to the beach on the non-touristy part and kicked it. The ride out was through rice paddies, workers, and ladies selling ocean dwelling animals. Once there we just sat on the beach and talked about life and love. On the way back in we stopped at a local soccer game and watched it in it’s entirety. A fight broke out which was interesting to me, seeing as how they aren’t supposed to "lose face". A dude got his ass kicked by a soccer player and he ...

Vodka night, royal tombs and French cuisine...

... flavours of vodka we could stomach! Drew had "****" (which is bovril), cinnamon, fishermans friend and Le Mon (aka lemon but he was drunk when he read the label as le mon). Apparently the cinnamon was rank but the **** and fishermans friend were nice. I had the snickers which was nice but promptly switched to the girlie drinks (ie mango daiquiri) as the vodka shots were massive!

We ended up chatting to the staff (who were mental - they were trying to make up ...

Historical Hue

... head up to read or gaze out the window.

My first challenge was figuring out how to climb up. I planted my feet on a nearby bar, clumsily leaped up, trying to not hit the guy below, and bumped my head on the roof of the carriage. I fumbled for my seat belt and realized I didn't have one. All that kept me from tumbling off was a handle bar in the shape of an upside down "U" situated alongside my hip. I tried to get ...

so very very tired...

... trip that was supposed to take in the sights of the city, but actually just meandered around a couple of murky swampy lakes and then returned with not much excitement to the inner-city. We entered with the hope that it might be the highlight of the day...it wasn't. After Angkor Wat, ruins have to be pretty epic to be registered as impressive, and this particular area had very little else apart from some ...

Hue - first night on a bus

... loved to spend another day here to look around the DMZ and explore the tunnels, which are supposed to be less touristic that the ones down south. Unfortunately they're also a bit more difficult to get to and I just don't have enough time to do it. I already know that I want to come back here at some point though, I had to miss out Sapa too, in the north, which looked amazing, much better than the trekking I did ...
