MONDAY 7TH SEPT
We arrived at the city of Chengdu to find our hostel's free pick up from the train station no where in sight. So we grabbed a cab and arrived at the lovely Traffic Inn hostel (not hotel which is next door). They apologised for not picking us up and paid for our cab fare. We were shown to our room in a converted warehouse building which looked nothing like the pictures on the website. The Traffic Inn is brand new and has only been open for three weeks. It is run by a chi...
this is our second day in Chengdu, we arrived yesterday and so took today to look around the city. There si a main road running through the middle of the city so it is quite smoggy to walk around. we saw the Mao statue today which we surrounded by tones of water fountains! every kind you can think of with smoke jets, water cascades and jets that move to form hearts! it was pretty good. there are loads of army serplus shops around here they sell pretty random things like bomb disposal gloves.....
Chengdu, Sichuan, China ashliegash We made it to Chengdu, capital of the Sichuan province to get ready for Tibet. Quite a few foreigners go to Tibet from here either by plane or train so that it is relatively easy to find people to partner with as a way to reduce expenses for getting a compulsory "tour" coming with the necessary Tibetan permit.
We found 2 Japanese Nishi and Wacky and a Tibetan agency which had an OK price (220 Euros for 8 days with 4x4).
Apart from that, the city (10M inhabitants) is know...
Another long bus journey to Chengdu saw us arrive late afternoon. We headed out on the first night for a buffet, secretly hoping it might be a western style buffet. When we got there it was clear it wasn't. There was loads of food just not a lot of what anyone wanted to eat; brains, chicken feet, pigs hooves and live fish were not on most people's wish list! We followed dinner with a trip to see the Sichuan Opera Show, which was put on purely for the tourists, but still v.enjoyable.

After eating one of those horrible Chinese breakfast made of brittle plant shoots and really doughy bread we made our way to the bus station. Purchased our bus tickets for 12:00 departure, so we had a couple of hours to lounge around at the station. We had a job getting our luggage through the security as they were taking all liquids off people including water at the entrance to the waiting hall, presumably as a precaution against some kind of bomb attack on a bus. The bus journey proved to b...

This program put forward some ...

... you place them into the pot - broth for mild, oil for spicy. We had 2 guests at our table from the university, and they took care of us. By the way, the entrees consisted of beef and pork (in all shapes and kind), and vegetables. I have no idea what some of the vegetables were - bamboo (panda food), lotus, tarot root, potatoes (like I have not seen before), and some other very interesting choices. All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and ...
Chengdu, Sichuan, China judyphhs... to those who are drinking. It was awesome to see. The next day was my first Chinese class. It was a little challenging, but I think if I study hard and brush up on my characters I will do well. I know that if I need help Wes (who was the same guy who fixed our internet) lives close and took a good portion of this class already. So there is help. After class four of us went to Carrefour, a four story french wal*mart, to get cleaning supplies to attack the mess that was our apartment ...
Chengdu, China bambbles... has been a lot lost, not just 70,000 odd lives (see second story). 1. from China Daily Sichuan reopens to tourists, full recovery by 2010 By Huang Zhiling and Luo Xianyu (chinadaily.com.cn) CHENGDU: He Ping, a 52-year-old taxi driver in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, sent a passenger to the Lidui Park in this city 48 km northwest of Chengdu early Sunday morning. Chengdu, Sichuan, China happysheep... or PJ's, again not really knowing what to do. Most people stayed on the streets until dawn. The next few days there was panic all over town and people were anxious as they had not experienced an earthquake before and especially not one with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale. The weather was awful which really didn't help matters, the hospitals all set up temporary outdoor shelters and there were people camping all over the city. I met some ...
Chengdu, Sichuan, China markwilliams84... to sell you something! It's like going to America and trying to find the 'old west'. (Hint: check out Montana or Wyoming) Chengdu is known mostly for its panda breeding and research center. (What we call in the States a Zoo) I stopped in for a tour and to hang out with a few pandas. You could pay extra to sit next to a panda ( I passed). It was raining the morning I went but this didn't seem to bother the pandas. The center has the whole tourist thing down to a science for ...
Chengdu, China samgowestWe must've given the impression that we really love Chinese rail travel as we hopped on another lengthy overnight to Chengdu (22hrs!). A big city of over 11 million, we were expecting more of the same. A bit of a surprise though as Chengdu is a laid back place where the people are a little more calm than the other places we have been. The sort of place where tea and Tai Chi in the park are the order of the day. Of course you'll all be ...
