Arrived 3am and it's a lovely hotel. Spent first day wandering around the Shangri La souk and then the Marine Mall for lunch. Back for a swim in the pool - like being in the bath and its 47 degrees - like being in an oven! Then a visit to the Grand Mosque where I had to wear an abaya. It was so hot walking around but so cool inside the white marble mosque. Finished my first day with a paddle and temp has dropped to 42! Drinking water like it's going out of fashion!

So did we.
It was time to get back to the ship because we still had a major event ahead of us. The cruise line organized a special party for the passengers who had boarded in London, complete with Hummer limos taking us to one of Abu Dhabi’s ritziest hotels.
Exquisite appetizers were provided by white-gloved servers. And the dinner was fancy and delicious.
It was a long day, but unforgettable. ...

Safely back at the hotel a massage soon ...
... and water from Super Soakers, and returned to the car exhausted, exuberant, and unable to contain his glee. We were blown away by the fact that all of those people were having so much fun while SOBER! They are not allowed to buy alcohol and everyone was having the time of their lives. In the U.S. it would have gotten out of hand somewhere, someone would be drunk and offended, a few people might get stabbed or go to jail. But here were thousands of people in stopped traffic, ...
... Dunes look like litter boxes. Beautiful. Our destination was a Desert BBQ site, with camel rides, hookah, henna tattoos, belly dancing, and a fantastic middle-eastern buffet. I had to lie down a bit, and after I took an antacid, I was all better! So, I got a henna tattoo, ate some great food, watched a belly dancer, and met a bunch of great kids who were on leave from a US Navy vessel in Abu Dhabi. God Bless them- they were having a blast. We had fun ...
