    ... full circuit, so today we settled for a taster by doing a 15km hike of the first five temples.

    Ryozen-ji

    As soon as we got to Bando train station, the closest to the first temple, we spotted a few henro in the traditional gear. When we got to the first temple, Ryozen-ji, there were many more, with mannequins kitted out as well to advertise that the nearby shop sold the outfit if you needed to get your own!

    The path I took wound through the countryside, took you through small towns, alongside orange groves and along a lot of roads. This walk would be more fun with more countryside, but this is a crowded place. People are friendly on the route and can be identified by their white tops and walking sticks with bells on. I saw a dread locked guy with what seemed like hundreds of bells pacing through one of the temples. He seemed very cool and self possessed.

    ... had soba and grilled river trout and was treated to cookies by the super nice staff while I waited for the bus back to Oboke. Then There was a boat ride and a mega walk up a hill with creepy ghost statues, chatty oba sans that gave me candy and I even saw a tanuki! Then onsen at the hotel and back for a giant vegan dinner. Now that I am just getting my bearings and remembering more Japanese it is time to go. ...

    ... on the tourist leaflets, we were slightly underwhelmed by the whirlpools when we got there! We had thought that there would be 2 really big, deep whirlpools under the bridge, however it is actually more like lots of little whirlpools which all twist and turn into one another. It was still a pretty impressive sight though.
