Days 13-16 were spent in Oita with Charmaine (my aunt), Koyo (her husband), Emma and Kei (their children). A big shout out to them for putting us up, entertaining us, being our tour guides, feeding us and generally putting up with us.

... in Beppu, though it's possible that I went a bit overboard: do four baths a day sound excessive? Aside from hot springs and sand baths, there isn't much to do in Beppu, despite what the tourist board may say. The one sightseeing trip I did do was to the eight hells (地獄), bubbling pools of mud and water hat bust out of the ground at temperatures which exceed 90°. ... rather soothing. The Japanese people using the foot bath come well prepared, they have a towel with them to dry off their feet. There is also a towel dispenser though and for 100 Yen I get myself a nice, small towel. Lots of families with kids visiting, it's a touristy spot for sure.
