... our decision to book all our train legs before we left Tokyo was the right way to go.

The Shinkasen is the Sakura which reaches a top speed of 300km an hour and it was noticeably faster than the previous bullet trains we had ridden on. You have this urge to fasten your seat belt as it is so much like air travel. Again, there was lots of tunnels, but we got good glimpses of the verdant green hilly countryside, the rice and vegetable ...

... Canal City before walking back to our hotel. We were pretty exhausted after a day of walking and shopping so we relaxed for a couple of hours before heading out for dinner. We said goodbye to Kazuko who took the bus to her home while Haruyo and the 3 of us took a different bus back to Hakata ...

... Mt Aso is active and was currently smoking so they had got a no go zone for a kilometre around the volcano which was a shame. There is a chairlift which takes you right to the crater rim but this was obviously closed. Everywhere was so green with hills and craters everywhere. We climbed up a lot of steps to reach the top of one old crater. From here we had a great view of the smoking volcano. We then walked around the ...

... of Aussies on a tour. Maybe the driver thought we were with them because we collected our bags and were waiting to pay and the driver got on the bus and drove off!! Oops! Free trip...wooohoooo. We had about three hours to kill before we could check into the ryokan so we found some lockers to drop our bags in and set off around the town. It was a shame about the rain because Kurokawa is really beautiful. It's all little winding streets and traditional buildings. It has a ...
