Kagoshima is the largest city in southern Kyushu. Things seem a bit less formal here than in Tokyo, and the region (originally known as Satsuma) has always been independent-minded. The Musuem of the Meiji Restoration is about the role of Satsuma in opening Japan to Western technology and culture. In 1865, the Satsuma clan illegally sent a group of …

After arriving in Kagoshima via Shinkansen I managed to get myself lost and wonder round the city aimlessly for about two hours! By the time I got to my hostel it was about 10pm so me and my Swiss friends ended up just sipping beer on the hostel roof and listening to the noise Kagoshima makes at night.

The next day we headed to Sakurajima, which is an active volcano just off the coast ...

... interested in Japanese garden landscape, thou the highlights of visiting the residence/garden was sampling all the treats. Pastry stuffed with yellow yam, purple yam, pig themed pastry, all the yum yum treats. Alex and I had our share of sampling before taking a peek of the residence.

Lunch is another highlight, the good thing with group tour is one gets fed quite well. With the rainy day like today, my hope of jumping in the salt water pool ...
