Yep, our flights have been booked and tomorrow we leave Japan to fly all the way to Muscat, where we're staying for a couple days until we do the short jump to Salalah our new home.

What is ...

Won't You Take Me to Retro Town?

... will have to wait for my next trip!

What better way to finish off my retro day than to stay at the Comfort Hotel in Hakata. The carpet in the rooms has a pattern that could be Polynesian art, a Rohrshoch ((?)) test, or an artifact from a well-preserved 1950's American living room. It's located across the street from the Hakata railroad station. Compared to the other hotels where I've stayed in Japan, this ...

Reports vary about the circumstances under which the Korean experts arrived, but there appears to be some ambiguity about whether their arrival in Japan was voluntary.

The old pottery village just outside Imari is actually the remnants of a secret government installation hidden at the end of a ...

... the other stuff was!! But glad we did as it was the best noodle soup we have had all trip. Then we decided to be brave and order some other little bits - Rob ordered some chicken skewers, which although this is what it was, we had no idea what part of the chicken it was from as it was hard and crunchy!!!! Lesley then pointed at a few things that could not be identified but thought it might be ...

The design of the bridge is typical of Buddhist architectural conception and reflects the concept that one thought only should be held at a given time. Random Thought #1

... I once saw this chick spit on the floor in the club, not unheard of but still, yuck. Then I saw an old lady spit in the bank - the bank! No one blinked. The spitting is so rampant that it's like going through a gauntlet at times. Whether you are trying to avoid being actively spit on or stepping in spit.

Fukuoka

... to meet friendly people who will make time for you, even when neither of you can really understand the other! Spent this evening at the Tenpaizan Hot Springs, had a really good dinner - a buffet, which I found out the Japanese call 'Viking-style dining' because you just grab food and stick it on your plate, terribly uncivilised! And then enjoyed the hot springs which were incredibly relaxing, especially the outdoor pool as you could just lie and look up at the stars!

Questions

... he started to say something in Korean and accidentally switched into Japanese. As he was shaking his head at the slip I switched to Japanese too, and we were able to trade some small amount of information. He was a Korean from Seoul who had gone to Fukuoka for a four day bike tour. Eventually Josh came up on deck and took over most of the conversation, being able to speak in both Japanese and Korean, but I was happy with my small amount of applied aptitude. The bike guy stayed with us ...

... number of the suburban city, the number of the block and within the block the number of the house. As it was explained to me there is also no real system to the number of the block or the number of the house. Numbers are allocated according to the construction time of the house, so the first house in a block gets the no. 1, and then the next house no. 2 and so on. Strange and even difficult for Japanese it seems. The teacher ...
