The past two days have seemed like the longest days of my life - in a good way, of course, but extremely long and tiring nonetheless. To re-cap the events of yesterday: The first flight ended up delayed by an hour due to the necessity of properly de-icing the plane (for which I certainly won't complain), though the delay upped my stress level about getting to my connector flight on time. Things worked out well, though, like they always seem to, and soon I found myself on a tiny airplane with ...
Nassau, Bahamas jbeightSorry that we haven't been able to write a blog sooner, this is the first time we've had internet access for long enough! Well, the two of us have been having a fantastic time in the Bahamas. We started out in Nassau where we spent a couple of days exploring the capital. The buildings here are very twee, pastel coloured and kind of colonial style. We navigated the streets and wandered through the straw market and watched the big cruise ships at the harbour. We also spent some time on Paradise...

Nassau, Bahamas saiklor_abroadI arrived in the Bahamas on Saturday at 7:00 pm via a "puddle jumper" from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. On the twenty-seater plane, about half of the passengers were Semester @ Sea students. The man next to me was a Bahamian who works in IT at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island. He filled me in on some things to do around Nassau as we made our way to Nassau. Customs was uneventful and my bags arrived safe and on-time. It was a muggy overcast evening in Nassau. On my flight there was a S@S stu...
Paradise Island, Bahamas seanmalonerules
... s Cay is under the Paradise Island bridge and at the other end of the spectrum from Paradise Island. It is lined with shacks of food stalls on both sides with fresh conch salads, cracked conch, etc and the fresh vegetables from Andros take up space under the bridge. It was a bustling place and most of the people were locals. Dominos and checker games were set up with big money being exchanged by the locals or ...
Nassau, Bahamas takinbetz... not to enter in the dark so they kept going. Leisel said she felt like the Flying Dutchman who never stopped sailing! Finally, after about 52 hours of this, Paul set his autopilot for a destination (not figuring tide & current) and fell asleep. Leisel was still on the cabin sole! They both were awakened abruptly when the boat stopped! They were somewhere in the Berries and had hit an island. All these islands have ...
WADERICK WELLS CAY, Bahamas takinbetz... of children jumping off the dock and swimming around our dinghies. It was a feat to be sure there were no children around the boat when we started up to leave. We've got a good NNE 15-20 kts winds coming across the water so by the time we got back to the boat I was soaked. Later we saw one of the Class A Sloops being towed over to a mooring ball - guess they are gearing up for their regatta next week. April 18, 2009 Wind is blowing 20+ kts ...
GREAT GUANA CAY, Bahamas takinbetz... That is if we can get in there! Pavlidis' guide goes on to say ....."Leaving the western tip a wide berth head westward then turn north" - that's where we spent most of today. At 11:30AM we are again sitting on a sandbar - just 3' from deep water just 3' from the entrance to The Pond. The tide is going out so we aren't going anywhere for a while. We were frequented by several visitors while whiling ...
n, Bahamas takinbetz... the cruise ships there, but not until after they built a man-made island called Shell Island (very small and uninhabited). The Disney resort has been turned in to a condo property and was completely empty, save a security guard. The beach was fabulous! White sand everywhere, incredible blue waters that are so clear you can always see the bottom. And, the water is scarily shallow throughout the islands: as low as 5 feet. We had a 3 1/2 to 4 ' draw, so when the tide was ...
Abaco Islands, Bahamas valton... wings about 9 feet in diameter) was flapping through the water. It has stripes of white spots and moved so gracefully above the sand. Unlike one we saw at Lighthouse Beach a few days ago, this one's barbed tail was down, so I was not afraid. This is one of my favorite beaches here and rarely do I encounter another beachgoer. Great beach combing. My daughter found some old bottles, one from Portugal, higher in the sand.
