The past two days have seemed like the longest days of my life - in a good way, of course, but extremely long and tiring nonetheless. To re-cap the events of yesterday: The first flight ended up delayed by an hour due to the necessity of properly de-icing the plane (for which I certainly won't complain), though the delay upped my stress level about getting to my connector flight on time. Things worked out well, though, like they always seem to, and soon I found myself on a tiny airplane with ...
Nassau, Bahamas jbeightSorry that we haven't been able to write a blog sooner, this is the first time we've had internet access for long enough! Well, the two of us have been having a fantastic time in the Bahamas. We started out in Nassau where we spent a couple of days exploring the capital. The buildings here are very twee, pastel coloured and kind of colonial style. We navigated the streets and wandered through the straw market and watched the big cruise ships at the harbour. We also spent some time on Paradise...
Nassau, New Providence Island, Bahamas markandcharOMG I AM SURROUNDED BY SASers!! The Towne hotel is overrun and FULL of us! Wheeeeee!! And everywhere on the streets and in every restaurant! It's SO amazing!! My roomates seem really cool and aren't total drinking partiers so YAY and they all seem reallllllly fun. One of them (Jason from Kansas) has never been out of his home state before and took his FIRST airplane ride today!! Wild eh?? Rachel is great and friendly and Glenn's luggage is all lost so he's a little out of sorts, but dealing w...
Nassau, Bahamas saiklor_abroadI arrived in the Bahamas on Saturday at 7:00 pm via a "puddle jumper" from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. On the twenty-seater plane, about half of the passengers were Semester @ Sea students. The man next to me was a Bahamian who works in IT at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island. He filled me in on some things to do around Nassau as we made our way to Nassau. Customs was uneventful and my bags arrived safe and on-time. It was a muggy overcast evening in Nassau. On my flight there was a S@S stu...

... who wanted in. We checked out the veggies and picked up three tomatoes that looked sooooo much better than anything we saw in Winn Dixie! Came around under the bridge and headed up the other side. The background noise consisted of blaring music from the various stalls and the constant whacking sound of mallets cracking conch! Guys were cleaning the meat from the conchs and the food was absolutely fresh. The conch salads ...
Nassau, Bahamas takinbetzApril 25, 2009 Well, we patched the dinghy and it still leaks. Actually, it leaks more than it did before. After sitting in the water it looks like a wading pool. The whole fuel support for the engine was compromised with the springing spring sprang into "on Norman's Pond" so Dave needs to keep the squeeze ball squeezed to ensure fuel gets to the engine. The wind is still blowing and we've been sitting on the boat since yesterday ...
WADERICK WELLS CAY, Bahamas takinbetz... adults. We got a big hello from everyone we passed. We met a couple on the docks who were carrying a pizza box back to their dinghy. They said DeShaMons had great pizza! That is one of the two restaurants - DeShamons and Lorraines. On the road we met a couple from ArCas (29' Dehler). We had first met them on Cambridge Cay. They were walking back from Adderley's Market with bags of food. They gave us the scoop on the fresh vegetables that ...
GREAT GUANA CAY, Bahamas takinbetz... dinghy - that is if the motor worked. Dave needs to try to change the fuel to see if that is the problem. Not today tho. Winds continued to pick up in the afternoon with a steady 20-25 kts. We spent the day lollying around inside the boat. I finished one book and started a second. Around 3PM I made biscuits. Since the oven is small and the pans are small to fit, it took four pans to make ...
norman, Bahamas takinbetz... dark so we altered our plans and carefully made our way into the southern anchorage. The guides counsel against running after dark and we agree with this except sometimes it is necessary and using GPS and radar together does make it possible. Additionally the Navionics charts for the Bahamas are now very good as they bought the surveys from which the Explorer charts are printed. The next morning Sun 15th Feb we weighed anchor as soon as we awoke shortly ...
Spanish Cay, Bahamas darborn... They are great! A highlight of the day was that we all got to watch the inauguration on the ship. It was very exciting because the majority of the people on the ship are Obama fans and were super excited during the ceremony! Another highlight of the day was just hanging around in the piano bar after dinner. Lots of SASers were hanging out and a huge jam session with the musicians took place. It was really fun to sing along with them at ...
