Fun to be had on the Ohio River

... up to silence each banging door and locker.

Then, around 3am, still only half asleep, Tom and I sat up in bed at the same time. "Oh ----, what's that smell??" We frantically began pulling up floorboards to determine the source of burning plastic and rubber. After a couple of minutes of searching we honed in on a fire hot water pump. Apparently a bearing had seized and because the wiring was undersized, not enough current passed to flip the breaker. Instead, it just ...

Moving along the Mississippi

... Oh my god-large tree, large tree! Whistle, whistle…) and busted out a minestrone soup belowdecks while getting tossed around by turbulence from the enormous tows. Good beginner’s practice for cooking at sea.
We passed through two locks but because of the draw down a couple of days prior, we only locked down less than a foot in both cases. These are the only two we’ll pass on the Mississippi.

After covering about 76 miles we pulled in ...

Yikes! Worst Hotel Ever!

... follow her and started to cross the road to the convenience store. When we explored the hotel property, we found a murky pool with a frog in it and a "nightclub" and restaurant that seemed abandoned. I would've complained about stuff, but I felt sorry for the family. After leaving this wretched place, we continued to Memphis, TN.

Trail of Tears State Park

We woke late at JAH's at about 9:30 and hit the road. We drove through Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas and Missouri, where we stayed at Trail of Tears Tears State Park. When we pulled into the park we met this lady named cathy, who was the ranger for the park. She soon acquired the ...

Done for the day

I did a lot of driving today. I putzed around in Michigan for a while getting some last minute supplies and eating lunch (Burger King in Brighton), but finally hit the road at about 1:00. The starting mileage on my odometer was 128,189. I took I-96 until I got to Lansing where I hopped onto I-69 toward Indianapolis. I had to stop just south of Ft. Wayne to fuel up ($4.18/gal - regular). In Indy, I ...

Trees of Ice

A few days ago, the city had a huge ice storm and the whole city lost their power. Yesterday, half of the city got their power back. Luckily, the theatre was in the part that got their power back. The show was sold out, until the storm, that is. Apparently, half of the people still didn't have power, nor could they get anywhere on the icy roads, so the house was only half full. But they were a great crowd nonetheless with high spirits.

Cape Girardeau - very wet and boring

... visited here provisioning before over-wintering in St Louis in 1803/04. Other than that.....well that's about it. We've spent the afternoon watching "Friends", the rain and writing up the Travelog. We're in a kinda pokey, over-priced room. It's cooler but still 70F.
