Oh, the alternative route was so much better

Three things me and the OW (off-road warrior) learnt today.

The appellation 'Highway' doesn’t always mean the road will be up to much

The classification C in respect of a road is advisedly given – think of lots of things that start with C – like ******

The OW’s onboard computer is a little optimistic on how far it can go on a half cup of four star.

But more of that later.

Got up ...

Day 1: Journey Bgins

... working brake it was quite an experience when he decided to make the 4x4 go sideways and in circles; apparently I reacted pretty well because I held onto the door, most of his friends grab the steering wheel and yell at him to stop. Up and down hills, over logs and ditches we finally made it back to the house. Then I took Sally onto his uncles grass air strip where I got her up to 120km on the slippery wet grass in the rain. The ...

Lots of other stuff.

The weather was still chilly, and it rained off and on for most of the morning, but kindly stopped for us at the stops we made.

Along the way we crossed from New South Wales into Victoria, and expecting some sort of Quarantine Police, I quickly ate a mandarin orange I had, but needn’t have worried. No-one there. Think it may be different crossing from Victoria to South Australia.

We took a ...

... miles from anywhere with a disability, but you can make your own mind up.

You see place names around Australia and think that they must have possessed their unique sense of humour from the early settlement days, but in fact they're taken from aboriginal names and have an uncanny knack of making you smile when you either see them or say them. The small village we passed through called Suggan Buggan though this was not the case*
It was very ...

Four Days in jail.

... It really was beautiful up there, the Snowy river cutting through the forest with nothing and no-one for miles and miles. And the stars at night! I’d forgotten just how clear you could see everything at night in Australia, the Milky Way stretching across the sky with a billion stars shining down on us. I’d forgotten how much I missed the Southern Cross, and how strange it was seeing Orion upside down. :) Man, I missed Oz.

... The road ran inland and eventually passed a couple of big lakes. We saw no coast at all until we arrived, late afternoon, at 'Lakes Entrance', a seasonal seaside town where the lakes joined the sea. A motel found in the quiet town, we did a quick shop at a local 'Safeway' and had an early night. Distance driven 319 Km 198 miles

Road Trip to Sydney for Christmas

Its now a long time ago some briefly for Christmas we first had a road trip up the coast with Paul (Parkmore player), Steve (lived with us in Melbourne, Gary and Anthony (met on our travels and lived with us for a week in Melbourne) to Sydney. So the Falcon set off loaded up to the hilt on the morning of the 22nd of December ...

... neither thankfully. It was early evening so we decided to get on with the drive, we drove through Marlo very quickly, mainly because it consisted of a boat ramp, a hotel and not much else, drove on to Orobost via the Marlo Plains, which were a complete contrast to the coastal wonders we'd just been splashing about in. The plains reminded me of NZ, flat and covered in farmland, but brown, parched, farmland that looked like it would go up in seconds if someone ...

On the Road to Phillips Island / Melbourne

... made it difficult to first; find the campground, second; find a campsite, and third; feel comfortable doing either of those things in a place that virtually looked deserted. The offices were closed, and the only information was pinned on a board that had no maps to campsites or facilites. We decided that our luck would be best tried elsewhere, so we headed back onto the Princes highway to continue our journey down the East Coast of Australia. The one good thing ...
