Doing what the people do in Matsumoto

We woke up rather late and had to rush down to breakfast. Getting out of bed when it's in the floor is tricky! We decided to go to the modern art gallery as the weather forecast was improving as the day progressed. The gallery was a fabulous space - the first thing to greet you was the incredible dotty flowers by Yayoi Kusama who is now world famous but was born in Matsumoto. Her exhibits were extraordinary all dotty. We loved the huge pumpkin room & mirrored rooms. We went ...

Leaving Tokyo was a bit stressful to say the least. We had 2 bags to forward to 2 future hotels on our itinerary. Japan has a very efficient & cheap luggage forwarding system we're told (it remains to be seen whether we will ever see our bags again)! As most of our journeys are now either by train bus or FOOT across the mountains we need to lighten our load considerably. We managed to cram everything into our ...

... at Craft and then leaving the mountain early for late sushi lunch at our favourite place (Hamacho). We'd met a new family at the lodge (the Lawrences from Singapore - their two girls got on brilliantly with our kids). They joined us for the sushi at lunch and then for dinner at Restaurant Sakai (the grilled mackerel was amazing)

... specialty Shinshu Apple KitKats! Now all we need to find are the seasonal, carrot-flavored KitKats we have read about, and our quirky KitKat quest will be complete!

Unfortunately, we missed catching the express, direct train back from Yudanaka station to Nagano (by literally ~30 seconds! Talk about effiecient trains), we were forced to take the local train back. It felt very local, as we were the only tourists on the train and we stopped at every tiny stop on the ...
