    ... were on, yes all the marquees were set up, yes there was music. But there was nobody home - a distinct lack of people and stalls was a sure-fired way to hit a roadblock on this festival and our plans. Turns out the festival didn't start till tomorrow night. What type of tourist bus was this? One that gave inferior information? One whose frequency was less than one an hour? One that didn't keep up to date with road closures?     ... more of Latvia for another time, and this is turning into much more of a see-the-capitals-and-dash trip than I had originally intended. But that's okay; I wanted / needed to be with my family these past few days. And if all goes well, I should hopefully be able to get the second half of my trip in more or less as planned. Which is still pretty damn good.

    ... this one is that the barge would come into a large "tray" and then the barge, "tray" and water would be lifted 15 metres - with just a 150 horsepower motor! The secret is that there are three large shafts under the "tray" ( 30 metres deep), each with a buoyancy float in the shaft that would make the whole structure almost weight neutral. Very cleaver and built before the Internet existed!
