The German train system is on strike until Monday. That is all BUT the ICE (intercity express) trains. So we did catch our 6:45 AM train from Brussels to Frankfurt. It was a little eerie to see all the trains parked. There were a few running but in most of the stations, like Koln and Bonn, we were the only train.

On the way to pick up the rental car we had this great Iranian cab ...

Visited two Catholic churches that had been reconstructed as they once were. The architecture shows the influence of Dutch.

But it is still not completely rebuilt yet from the ...

After several cups of coffee we joined a walking tour of Frankfurt. It was led by an American, Dave, and took us around all the historic places in the city centre. For someone who doesn't "do" history (and I have to admit to mentally wandering at times, literally at others, to take photos) I found it not bad. It was pretty much a potted version that even I could cope with. We did go to the food market - reminded me of Queen Vic Market in Melbourne, but on ...

Darmstadt and Frankfurt - waiting and waiting!

... well, and they picked us back up at 6.30 am and drove us back to the airport.

There was a (private) carnaval party going on at the hotel of some other guests, which made it a nice stay at the hotel too... watching all the dressed up people walking around ;)

The flight was supposed to leave at 9am, but eventually departed at 10. No problem, we were waiting long enough anyway and at least I had Laura to talk to ...
