... Even with ear plugs It was like trying to sleep backstage at a Kate Bush concert. Luckily there was a period of silence after the film was finished but then the bloke put another one on, at 1 o clock in the morning. Even the locals were sleeping. After a bumpy ride we arrived in Patna at 4am then asked a bloke from the bus if he knew where we might find a bus to Gaya, our next destination. Given our experiences this far ...

... break. Once the break was over, our driver said the bus was broken and sold us, and several other passengers, to another bus driver across the street (has happened a lot on our trip, not just India). We loaded into the already full bus, with help from the "little person" bus assistant. The only available seats were in the drivers cab (think semi-truck cab) right behind his seat. We thought it was pretty cool, riding with the ...

... for a tip. The cost? Don't ask. Best food in India: A tie between jalebiya and gulab jamun. Worst food in India: Beer with glycerol. Biggest regret: For all my talk of having a sense of humour with people trying to sell you stuff, I lost my patience a few times. They just never quit, the word "no" (or my failed attempt at the Hindi equivalent) has no effect on them. It's really funny looking back on it, but at the time ...

Worst (Travel) day of our trip

... for. We were so unhappy. All of South America we rode on buses with our small bags on our lap with all of our stuff in them. But in Asia, we weer lulled into a false sense of security and left the bags on the floor, the exact thing people warn you NOT to do in South America. As we wallowed in our misery, all the people continued talking about this. One of the girls spoke great English and she said they wanted to help us. First they foudn the number of the owner of teh bus ...

... have hoped for. The flight back to Delhi was uneventful, eventhough we had to stop in Ranchi, which was in the opposite direction. And our final night in Delhi, was spent in same hotel where we started, except with an upgrade to the Club Tower, which was very nice.

The best worst place in India!

The majority of my work in Bihar took place over two day period in the block of Samastipur. I am telling you ... the drive from Patna to this place was so so so so beautiful ... it is as if the more "backward" a place is the more beautiful! No wonder Buddah didn't want to be all locked up in that palace ... he had Bihar's wonders at his doorstep. So yes - the beautiful drive away from stinky Patna across the Ganges (said Ganga) River and through ...

... my shirt, crawled through my beard and filled my nostrils. A person who is cremated at the Ganges, lit by flames from the eternal fire and spread into the water gains instant moksha- release from the cycles of life and death. It is the river that grants it. Analogous in Christianity perhaps to being able to drink an eternal wine from the Holy Grail. In five cases: Holy men, children, lepers, pregnant women, and ...

Quintessential India

... Because Hindus believe that the earth takes care of itself, garbage has been thrown into the river (and the streets) for centuries. People and animals go "potty" in the river as well, dead human bodies and cows are thrown into it and much more. Needless to say, it is one of the most polluted waters in the world; and still, it is amazing to see people in the river. They do everything from the religious bathing rituals, to laundry, meditation, yoga, cutting hair, etc ...

Fun in Patna

OK, so Christmas turned out pretty decent except for the not being home part (which is a big part of it). New Years Eve was another story altogether. We spent our New Years Eve on an overnight train from New Jaipulguri to Patna. Normally I really like the overnight train but this one was a little different. Our train was suposed to arrive somewhere around 3:30 A.M. so we figured we'd do without sleeping bags since we ...
