It was a bit of a rush this morning as we had to drive from Beaulieu Sur Mer to Menton to return the hire car. Then we caught the train to Sanremo (Italy) for the next nights stop. We did this because if we took the car and dropped it off in Italy it would have cost an extra $500 Euro. So the plan is to stay in Sanremo tonight and ...

They barbecued lobster tail for dinner, toasted with champagne at midnight (as you walk around the room kissing everyone's cheeks), and then warmed up very strong french cheese on the fire and served it with bread as fondue after the toast. Day 294 5 hrs, 11.1 kms It's nighttime. The train crosses a long bridge across a gorge before reaching Cuneo on a plateau on the other side. I wander around the quiet streets, to the main plaza and back to the edge of town--but realize I'm going to have to hike all the way across the gorge bridge to find a secluded camping spot. Next morning there's a more cheery atmosphere. It's the first day of school and parents are taking their smartly dressed kids off to ...

... can explore freely--it's now being used as a public library)... AND there's a path around the perimeter of the city so you can fully enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Off to the west you can see the plains gradually turning into foothills which then turn into the mountain range that separate Italy from France. A great way to end my ...
