Historical Traveler Reviews of Toucan Inn & Bonkers Tobago
You would have to be 'Bonkers' not to love this place
from wedding31
After our 6th holiday at the Toucan Inn and Bonkers, we have returned home still yearning to be back there, everything is still as wonderful as ever, even the Pleasure Pirates, who are a great group of lads, who are very intelligent and very funny entertainers, and should be taken as such by all regardless of colour or creed. One of the best things about 'Bonkers' is that 95% of the staff are the original ones, who helped to get this beautiful place it's reputation for looking after it's guests no matter what age or race, we still find nothing is too much for them, they will do anything to make your stay as magical as possible.
We are booking our next trip to 'Bonkers' for next year as soon as the dates are available, cannot wait to return.
Well done and many thanks to 'Sir Chris', Jim, Troy and all the excellent staff

We stayed at the Toucan Inn for New Year.
The Toucan Inn is a wonderful place for a relaxing holiday. The staff are brillant and nothing is too much trouble for them. We stayed in a poolside room which was lovely (number 13) it had a nice private terrace with views of the gardens and pool. The only thing which could have been better was the size of the bathroom it was a touch on the small side but to redem itself it had a great shower.
If you prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of a soul-less resort then the Toucan is perfect and comes highly recomended, we hope to come back soon.
Cannot find fault

Spent 1 week in October at the Toucan Inn and cannot fault the place one bit. It is a small Hotel with 20 rooms but the staff ensure that every guest is treated like a friend. Nothing is too much trouble. The staff assist your every neeed be it a taxi or another great rum cocktail. Bonkers the restaraunt on site is also superb and very reasonably priced. The accomodation is simple but very clean and comfortable and is cleaned and changed daily. If I had one minor criticism then that would be the bathrooms could possibly benefit from an upgrade. This place proves that the Carribean is not all about spending huge amounts to stay at anonymous all inclusive resorts and can be done for a good price without losing comfort or class.
Very comfortable

Stayed there in February 2004 and had a wonderful time. On the same trip I went to Trinidad and Barbados and Tobago was the friendliest island by far. Despite the usual (it happened at every hotel we went to) check-in fiasco "we thought you only wanted one bed" (2 boys watching the cricket, with email proof that we had requested 2 beds). The hotel was a wonderful oasis - relaxed music at the pool, enough loungers as well as tables with umbrellas. We had a cabin away from the pool, with one wonderful king/queen sized bed, and good a/c. We had dinner a couple of nights and were very happy in the open air bar/restaurant (good price and quality - not the usual hotel restaurant rip-off). The only downside was that breakfast could not be eaten in faster than 30 mins (order, eat, initial bill) as everything was a little slow (but that is the Tobago way...). Hotel staff were fine (although not the brightest). Would certainly recommend it, although note it is about a 20-25 minute walk to the good beach.
Luxury feel on a budget....

We booked our holiday at the Toucan Inn through Tropical Places after reading such positive reviews on the Trip Advisor site. We weren't disappointed, in fact the Toucan Inn still managed to surpass expectations. The Garden Rooms are spacious and comfortable, the air conditioning was great, the staff were friendly and being offered the choice to have a local breakfast of salt fish or flying fish was a fantastic and surprising departure from the norm (don't worry they also offer full English for those who can't live without!).
Even given the positive reviews, I was still expecting a much more 'budget' feel to the holiday but I have to say it still felt like a luxury get-away at a discount price.
We ate out a great deal to sample the diversity of the food which Tobago had to offer and being a seafood fanatic I tried quite a few different restaurants lobsters. Whilst they were all great, I have to say that the cheapest and best of the lot was the lobster we had at the Toucan Inn which was cooked in coconut milk.
This is the first time I've ever written a review of anything, and that's indicative of how impressed I was by the Toucan Inn and of course Tobago as a whole.
Highly recommend snorkelling trip to Angel Reef, Little Tobago for 'twitchers' and 'non-twitchers' alike and have it on good authority (from my other half) that deep sea fishing is a must.
A comfortable, friendly little place

We decided to go to The Toucan in as we wanted to go to Tobago and noticed that it was affordable. We kind of took a chance with it as we like to explore the whole place on holiday and not just stick to the hotel. We were not disappointed! The rooms were clean, comfortable and air conditioned. The staff were superb - nothing was too much trouble - and the food at Bonkers was great. The location is just right - just a 20 minute walk to Pigeon Point and an even shorter walk to Store Bay. I would recommend hiring a car and exploring the rest of the lovely island - the villages and the wonderful rainforest. We can't wait to go back...Highly recommended....and excellent value for money.
Great Great and Great

I didn't stay in the hotel but spent all of my time there.... The food and the staff are excellent and as for the regular trio mentioned in an earlier review they are absolutly excellent... we had mostly mixed race couples in our group and not one of us heard anything that could be taken badly. Go and enjoy we certainly did...xx

Nice setting, good food but it is the entertainment you have to watch out for.
They have a regular Calypso trio consisting mainly of teachers who seem to be under the impression that foreigners will not understand the insults hidden in their songs. This is especially true if you are a mixed race couple.
The worst part is the management (caucasian)are aware of it but their only reaction is "Oh I have told them about that before but they don't listen" - no apology.
As a regular visitor to Tobago i have been to Bonkers many times in the past and even recommended the place to freinds. NEVER AGAIN
Great Time
