Ito Arrival

A travel blog entry by canadiansmiley

Ito is a laid back city with lots of onsens. I stayed at the K's House hostel. It's 2900¥ but very nice place to stay and it has a onsen which one can explore. The hostel used to be a hotel and it dates back to 100 years ago. Very old wooden structure. Quite an experience for couple of nights. To get here it took me most of the day. It was two train rides and 5 hours of travel. Relaxed in the bath and have a good night ...

... worth suffering for...and I have suffered plenty on this tour.

Unlike Norikura and Shirane which both had a fair amount of traffic and tourist facilities at the top or along their routes, the secondary mountain routes of the Izu Hanto are more isolated. I'm planning to book an onsen for tomorrow night (Thursday in Japan) as the Izu Hanto is a popular onsen destination and there are some cheap deals on weeknights. The plan is to travel light with just one change ...

I think I ate a jellyfish & other stories

... shower was a bit unexpected. This though turned out to be my first introduction to the traditional Japanese onsen. Here men and women are separated and bathe, naked, in large communal hot springs. A daunting experience, and surprising in a country where modesty appears to be high on the agenda. Not in an onsen! Happily my hotel has mini private onsen which suits nicely after a day at the beach. Out in Itō I ...
