3day/2night trip to Tortuguero to see the turtles

Sunday morning we set off to Tortuguero which is situated on the east coast of Costa Rica. Now unlike Punta Leona, where we stayed the previous week, Tortuguero is on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and as such it is the Atlantic Ocean that hits it shoreline not the Pacific Ocean. Due to Costa Rica's historic past, the people and the culture on the eastern side of the country is more similar to that of the Caribbean than the Hispanic occupancy in the west. Further more it is its geography an...

It was raining like crazy and did not look much forward to spending two hours in an open boat. So the trip was postponed for two hours, giving us time to linger around and have breakfast first.

It was actually clearing up by 8 AM, and all equipped with either our own rain ponchos or those you could borrow for free from the hotel, we started ...

... for about 10 minutes and then sat down while our guide explained to us (in spanish) about the turtles. I tried to listen but he was whispering and talking fast so none of us could understand much and it was sooo hot (no wind at all) and we were exhausted. We were glad to be walking to the beach finally and after about 10 minutes of walking, we waited another 10before our guide was told that there is a turtle nearby. We had to walk about 1/2 kilometer (in the ...

... the most common trees are the Hawk Trees named because the seed pods resemble hawks in flight, they grow uninhibited along the banks of the river. Many species of trees found in Tortuguero form large buttressed root systems to support their massive height and weight in the shallow, tropical soil. We took a small tributary known as the Palm Canal and were amazed to see the water turn black caused by the tannin in it. It was like travelling through ink. Allan also took ...

It was a place, you could leave everything else behind, because it wouldn't have mattered. When we wanted to move on north ways towards Tortuguero, town of the turtles, we soon found out that we had to be creative to do so, due to a strike that blocked a bridge on the way and let no cars nor busses pass by ...

The computers were through Willis´s brothers house, opposite the kitchen where the baby was lying on the floor and the wife was cooking ...

We stopped at a mini mall type plaza that would have looked at home in any North American city... banks, a grocery store, etc... and across the street... heaven. We couldn't believe what we were seeing and after so many days of eating questionable food, we all rushed the ...

At one point, after it had reached the sand smoothed by the receding tide, it appeared to be home free, until it hit the heel impression of a footprint running parallel to the shore. The little turtle fit entirely within the width of the heel, and struggled mightily to climb back out; for a second, it looked like it wasn't going to make it. But with its flippers spinning like toy ...
