... The Principal Investigators, Carolina and Stephan were excellent teachers. We were taken to the Archeology museum in Piombino and to the archeology sites at Barratti and Populonia. to see the Etruscan tombs and the remains of the roman city to give us more context about the dig.

We stop here for lunch, more pasta and brochette and espresso. There is a cobbled road leading somewhere, with a brick worked archway over the road. There is a plaque attached to the arch with the names of the towns folk who were lost in WWI and/or WWII. Sad to see so many names from the same family, so many fathers, brothers and sons lost to such a small village. Such a loss must surely devastate such a small rural community.
