... in Tokyo on a Vespa, we both decided immediately that this was not the way to travel for us! Instead we opted to go round Lipari literally, by boat. The day trip in a smaller boat, with 12 passengers, also included circumnavigating the adjoining island of Salina, stopping in two delightful ports, and also stopping for swims in the clear blue Tyrrhenian Sea. Actually at the first swim spot, off the coast of Lipari, the sea is aquamarine, from the pumice dust covering the ocean ...

After a rushed start we arrived safely at Catania airport with plenty of time to spare - thank you Mt Etna for not erupting or billowing clouds of ash into the atmosphere so we could depart on time! There was a bit of excitement as we were getting onto the plane . We docked a little late at 10:15AM but we finally got on the tour bus. Had a 60 minute drive south along the coast and then up the mountainside ...

... later - Zia forgets she has said goodbye!) We headed over to cousins Tindara and Saro for lunch with Antonio # 2, his girlfriend, daughter Maria, cousin Angelo, Zia Serena, Zio Aldo (12 of us in total). What a feast, tortellini with Ragu, salad, potato mashed with spring onions and Ham then pressed into a bowl and baked (almost croquette like), chicken Marsala and mushrooms, homemade sausages then fruit and a gorgeous dessert called Bianco e ...

Why are these ruins in such bad condition?

After lunch with family we headed up with a first class, drive up to the top, locals pass with Andrea and Barbara to the Tindari to have a wander and view the old church which has been closed for nearly 100 years as it is perched precariously on the clifftop. It is open to the public occasionally and today we were lucky enough to see inside. We spent about an hour looking around and then headed up to see the Grecian ampitheatre and ...
