Klimmen in Las Canadas

Tenerife Amable

... br>

Not sure if the weather will allow us to do the Masca gorge but still a few days left so maybe.´Tenerife Amable´ it says on the back of the buses, which means ´kind Tenerife´ - and so it is, appreciated all the more after so much travelling; pleasant temperatures only four hours from home, no insects and no time difference, unbelievable!

and so it is nearly Christmas and we´ll be in the UK - so Feliz Navidad to all and enjoy.

... that our bikes hadn't recovered from the dismantling experience completely - not wanting to change gears easily which doesn't make climbing hills much fun! Once up we followed the road as far as it would go, and ended up at a bizarre place which seemed to be a hermitage or some kind of religious centre, but was surrounded by many huts constructed from tarpaulins, pallets, cardboard, battered bits of boat and the ...

... leading to the sea. There are several parts to the place, we stayed in La Calera which is the old village stuck precariously to the side of the La Merica cliff.

As Valle Gran Rey faces west, it gets wonderful sunsets, and the biggest crowd we´ve seen in our whole trip gathers on the beach each evening. Bongos are played, people dance in the waves as the sun sinks behind El Hierro (believed to be the end of the world) and everyone enjoys the view with a beer or a ...

The Self Preservation Society

a
bit more energetic over the last few days. We got the bus to Santiago
del Teide and got talking to Peter from the Netherlands, whose company
was much appreciated on the walk along the ridge above Masca. He was
carrying a rather large backpack but as he´s an experienced mountaineer
this just about kept him to our speed! The views were spectacular and
we got back just before it started to rain. The journey home involved
two buses and a long wait in Guia de Isora ...

Escaping the Winter

... as Las Americas is so hilly even getting about it is good exercise - but we´ve made the most of the warm sea and sandy beach. We also took a walk up the Barranco del Infierno - about an hour and a half to the waterfall through a succession of different landscapes and dizzying views. We have found a good and very cheap restaurant, and eaten sardines and canary potatoes until they come out of our ears. In a desert of tribute bands, we´ve also ...

... food, a peaceful if basic place to stay and a landlady who rattles on in Spanish despite our understanding maybe one word in twenty. However with the aid of the phrasebook we get across what we want to know: or so we believe... The shipping magnate Fred Olsen has this place sewn up, but we came over on the boat he doesn´t own which the Tenerife travel agents swear blind doesn´t exist! Yesterday we did a walk of about ...
