... far was pizza slices off paper sitting on the smooth marble steps in a quiet square. Plenty of Trattorias and Osterias to sell sit down meals with lots of bread and pasta on the menus but little in the way of fresh fruit or salads. Deb's bargain hunting investigation found a supermarket hidden amongst the gold chintz so we were able to stock up on fruit, water and nibbles at quarter of the price in touristic delis. ... Torcello and Burano. On Murano we visited a glass making exhibition and the craftsman/artisan made a bowl and a fish but he didn't do any glass blowing with his mouth which was disappointing. We then went into the showroom but there was nothing of interest to me. Second island was Torcello and this was quite pretty but not really a lot to see except for the old church and some older roman ruins. Perhaps I have been in Italy for too long now ...

... an 8 bed room with three other girls from North Carolina who are studying abroad in Paris. Not a lot of people in the hostel were chatty despite Karliana's valiant effort to make friends. This confirms that we are indeed here at the 'acqua alta' (high water) time of the year, and our hostess later explains that as Plaza San Marco is the lowest part of Venice it is the first to suffer flooding when it happens. This also explains that the temporary raised platforms running across the square in front of the basilica are not there for some sort of staged performance — they provide a thoroughfare when the flooding gets too bad. ...
