    From Xi'an it was off to Beijing. As I was traveling on May Day (the non-US world's Labor Day and a pretty big deal in communist countries), a major national holiday, I had a flight pre-booked to avoid getting stranded anywhere. And I had an invite to stay with the Menzels, so on arrival at Beijing, I made my way to John and Qiao's apartment (of the China wedding fame). Never turn down a free bed. Or beer. Or food.
