    ... them. We then had the opportunity to explore the village. The traditional thatched roofed house has at least 3 stories. The main floor are the common rooms, second floor living quarters and the upper floors store rooms. The thatched roofs needs replacing every 25 years or so at a cost of 200,000,000. Good thing for heritage buildings, the government pays for 90% of the cost.

    Met at 8.30 for breakfast, decided to an American style breakfast, bacon, scrambled eggs etc it was yuk. Headed off with Akiko to Takayama,s morning market then continued on to Shirakawago to visit the folk village. What a beautiful place it is basically how it was in the shogun times, timber buildings with thatched roofs. A new freeway went from Tokyo to Kanazawa it took 20 years to build. Before ...

    ... we had the best soba noodles imaginable with wonderfully flavourful soup and wild vegetables. Dessert was a mango and apple mix soft ice cream stacked 15 cm high that had to be the best in recent memory. Some time was spent walking the streets seeing the structures and shops.     ... in my hands as they are frozen.
    I finally arrive back to return the bike, and head back to the hotel for a warm bath. Oh the relief to be warm again. Worked out the ride was around 35ks, so will be interesting to see how sore i am tomorrow. Thoroughly enjoyed the ride, even if the conditions were not favourable.
