... Canal City before walking back to our hotel. We were pretty exhausted after a day of walking and shopping so we relaxed for a couple of hours before heading out for dinner. We didn't want to go very far, nor have too large a meal so we found the perfect place right across the street from our hotel - a place called Sukiya where they served simple one bowl meals called gyu-don, beef or pork cooked with vegetables served on top of rice. John had a delicious curry ...

We arrived to our hostel, Aso Base Backpackers, and dropped our bags before catching a bus up to Mt Aso itself. We had taken a map from the hostel so decided on a route and ...

... through and is famous for it's many onsen. Everywhere were ducts letting out steam and signs for onsen. We stopped for lunch in a tiny cafe. To my horror, I found out the local speciality here...horse meat. Most things on the menu were horse and there was no way my favourite animal would ever end up in my stomach. Luckily they had some fried chicken and vegetable croquettes. Dave decided to try horse meat with rice which apparently was good. We had a look in some gift ...

... grabbing some food it was back on the Shinkansen for the ride to Kumamoto, arrival at night and a wander through the town I arrived at my accommodation again traditional Japanese but in a dorm type room with 3 others, poor buggers would have to endure my snoring! I'd still not sorted my accommodation problem for golden week but finally struck lucky here whilst looking through some pamphlets and found a hostel/ Ryokan ( ...
