Arriving in Kyushu

... The next morning I wandered the side streets and lanes, and found myself at Yusida Shrine, welcomed by a Nandi on the left (later learned there is also a sacred cow/patron god in Shinto)

Then to the blast of the main streets, and ticket on to Yufuin. (I fly out of FUK, so will explore more of the city when I return).

Lives in luggage, again.

Here we go again, off to lands unknown (to us, anyway) with our lives stuffed into luggage. The last time we do this will not be too soon! I suppose it's the price of an adventurous lifestyle.

Speaking of which, we are currently in Nogata, Fukuoka which is probably the *least* adventurous town ever. It consists of rice fields and... rice fields. My grandparents live here though, and it's also where we ...

Won't You Take Me to Retro Town?

... has one of the more posh unit bathrooms--a ceramic tile interior, separate faucets for sink and tub/shower (instead of the usual faucet that swings), and a relatively low step into the room. By the way, adjacent to the train station, there is a bus station which has got to be the narrowest bus station in any major city, and there is a supersize Daiso 100-yen store above the bus station.

We stayed in Fukuoka for one night as we were getting the Beetle at 9am in the morning from the port here. We knew it was a bit of a party town and had many street stalls so went out in the evening for a wander. We walked for miles but ended up back at the first street stall we saw as it had a good view and seemed busy enough that it was ok to eat in!! Sat down and got noodles as we couldn't decide ...

Relo runs riot in Fukuoka

... two tries (it's rare enough for a flanker to score one let alone two)... in defence he was solid but in attack, he really looked like a seasoned international player. Again, you have to take the performance with a pinch of salt because the Japanese are hardly formidable opponents but the way he steamrolled his way over their players, the way he spotted and exploited gaps in their defence, his brilliant support play, constant involvement in the ...

Fukuoka

... is almost up! Have spent the last couple of days exploring a bit more of Fukuoka. Went to the Dazaifu shrine which is beautiful and tried green tea flavoured ice cream - not as disgusting as it may sound, actually rather nice! Did a bit of shopping and enjoyed the glorious sunshine! Unfortunately to make up for all the nice weather we've had, Saturday was a day of rain, rain and more rain! It was Helen's birthday so we took it pretty easy, had a really good ...

Questions

... interaction with the locals as I can in class. None the less, I felt weak about withdrawing, that I had failed myself in some way. My thoughts and emotions on the subject are complex, as you can tell I'm sure. Josh and I tried to get an international pay phone working in the lobby so that I could call K.L.I. I spent much of the time staring off into space and thinking rather than doing much in the way of helping. In the end we didn't have any luck with it and I said that I'd call from ...

Fukuoka

... highway could be seen from far away, as its sides were painted in light blue. If you are looking for Fukuoka on the map, then look all the way on the southern most large island of Japan, and it will be written either as Fukuoka or as Hakata, or it may not be mentioned at all. People from Tokyo keep calling this modern urban town, as a town out in the countryside, or provincial place. How very strange. In Fukuoka airport I was ...
