    Today we got up early and got on the train to Matsumoto by 8.00am. Our trip was a bit of a late decision, we were tossing up between Yokohama or Matsumoto Castle and, in the end, we decided on the castle, which claims to have the oldest five-storey tenshu (main tower) in Japan.
    It is a lovely castle, with a wide moat, filled with colourful carp, and an eye-catching red bridge across the moat.

    ... area as you had to walk about two miles from the bus stop then into the forest to see this incredible sight, the Japanese macaque monkeys bath in the hot onsen water, and although the park area wardens supply food to entice them to the area and the existing pool is man made it isn't an enclosure and the monkeys roam freely, the pool was built after the monkeys were found one day in a local onsen hotel bath during the winter!     ... quite cold by the end as we had to take our shoes off to tour the castle & the floors were very cold. Nia decided that another hot sweet fish was the answer so we bought another to take back for tea. Chilled to the bone it seemed like a good moment to experience the hot spring baths in the hotel. There are separate male and female baths. We read up on the dos and don'ts which were summarised by the leaflet as "do as the naked people do" so we did! It was very hot but ...
