Matsumoto is a mountain city on Japan's main island, Honshu. It's known for Matsumoto Castle, a 16th-century stronghold nicknamed 'Crow Castle' for its distinctive black walls.

We took a train from Shinjuku station to the quaint town of Matsumoto. Passing through the rain and fog, we had a peaceful train ride with undisturbed views of …

Walked to Matsumoto castle, an amazing old wooden castle, shoes off, and walked up the 6 levels. Some stairs were very steep, almost vertical. Beautiful manicured gardens. Dinner at an Irish pub - not that ...

Particularly interesting were the Children’s Memorial, with millions of paper cranes, and the Peace Flame, to be kept burning until all nuclear weapons on earth are gone. Nearby was an excellent museum with details about the event, and a memorial library with lots of photographs and stories from survivors. All in all, it made for a fascinating, insightful, and sobering ...

Still here. No need to worry, I didn't get washed away with the rain. It's been quiet for a few weeks, but not because I didn't have anything to write about. On the contrary: from the moment my plane landed on Haneda Airport, I had so much to do I couldn't find the time to sit down and write you an update. Oh, about the rain: the flooding you might have read about two weeks ago was on the other side of Tokyo. The river near my home rose quite a lot after the ...
