Bahia de Rincon Las Galeras, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic, +1-809-538-0201
Hello Friends! April has arrived and the world is heating up a lot! Cinderella, my 9 month old puppy, and I are doing alright although she did eat something terribly toxic this week. We gave her a round of antibiotics and I believe she is on the up and up now. Semana Santa begins tomorrow and the beaches in Samana will be very crowded. I hope to stay away from all the people. This week ...
Samana, Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... bought us special Dominican coconut bread on the way. Whale-watching was a 5 hour endeavor...quite fun but I think I'm covered on whale-watching for the next 20 years. The boat was soooo rocky and several people were getting sick. It wasnt helped by the fact that the crew started playing a recording of a male whale singing...because that in itself resembles the sound of vomiting. Thankfully, i am not ...
Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic aprilrenee... food cooked in a shorter period of time. Other benefits are that it will improve health of the family as it has a chimney to direct the smoke upward, requires less fuel which saves the family time and money, and reduces deforestation in the community. This stove is designed to help improve the lives of families who cook on open flame fire between three rocks. In my rural community, many use this cook method or have reverted back ...
Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbirdI've decided to spend 3-4 days in Las Terrenas before returning to Santo Domingo. I've noticed it's a heavily developed area in Dominican Republic with many expats from France, Italy and Germany. In fact, when I held a conversation with a local Dominican women she assumed I was French! Major restaurants and buildings in the area seem to be owned by many French people so she just assumed. Although the beaches are beautiful here I find myself missing ...
Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jeremyj... Bonaparte in exchange for territory he controlled in Spain; Bonaparte drew up plans for Samanį to be the New World capital. The next few years were chaotic. There were lots of strategic plays on the behalves of the world's colonial powers, U.S., Britain, Spain, and France. At this time, Haiti was the wealthiest colony and prized as Prima Dona of colonies in the New World being wealthy in slaves. In my history lecture, I learned that England ...
Samaná Peninsula, Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic jayrbird... in the US. The Victoria II is a relatively small boat, about 50 passengers were on board. The ride out to sea was quite choppy, and there were big swells rolling in from the ocean. Within the first ½ hour, Kim spotted a juvenile male, and basically stayed with this one whale the rest of the trip. He cruised around our boat, coming up to breath about every 4 minutes. For most of the time he didn't do much, and we just saw a little of his ...
Las Galeras, Dominican Republic sfrtw... of this has to do with the throngs of Dominicans who reside in the US and have made it big there or because of those who return here often, flashing the latest trends and symbols of success and giving some credence to the line currently being peddled that if they can't get to Gringoland in order to enjoy the same material goodies, then maybe Gringoland can indeed be brought to the Dominican Republic. The lure is an attractive one, that is certain. But in ...
Samaná, Dominican Republic chimichenga... from the hip of a local. We bought the essentials of life - pancake mix, vegies and fruit, pasta, cheap Red Wine and Rum for home made Sangria. This part of my trip has really turned into a vacation, but that to was on Goatgirl“s agenda. The afternoon is spent lazing on the beach. It is hard not to laze here in the Caribbean. Goatgirl and I are currently competing in a tanning contest. I swear I am winning though she thinks it is the hair on my arms that make them ...
La Galleras, Dominican Republic adrianmurray... Gua, we are dropped off in the town of Miches, and pointed towards another Gua Gua for the 25 or so kilometre ride to Sabana de la Mar. This particular minibus is a rust bucket, with the rear window made up solely of brown gaffer tape and no glass. There are already 14 people trying to get in, and the driver is determined to get us both in as well. It is not a popular route, so we are worried as to when the next Gua Gua will come past, so we cram in. One ...
Sabana de la Mar, Dominican Republic adrianmurray... the wat** is blue, clear and not too cold. It is a warm sunny day and we are frying to a rath** delightful brown. Rath** than laze the entire day away, we did wand** in the oth** direction up the beach. Th**e was one guy on a horse in the distance, probably one of the nearby coast guards, and a lone fish**man far away with a net. But apart from the Pig, th**e was only miles and miles of empty sand. Th**e must be few places left anywh**e in the world like Playa Limon.
