... love and sacrifices were made to her here. Farmers say there was a famously beautiful woman who used to sell wine in one of the cellars. Of course we made several jokes that I was the beautiful woman!! Unlike the wine regions in Australia, it is extremely easy to get from cellar to cellar here. No need to do a bus tour or have a car - you just walk as they are right next to each other! The over 150 cellars are carved into several hundred metre thick tufa in the hills of the valley, ...

... some interesting 3-D painted altars replacing ones that were burned in a fire. Next to it was the Town Hall and an old fashioned pharmacy. We had to go back to the car to plug the meter, then walked back through the other side of town towards the large Basilica. On several houses there were markers showing the height of the water during the 1878 flood- it would have been up to my nose! Across from the Basilica is a university that has a beautiful library- it was built by ...

... the cellars we saw the presses and barrels, some continuing as much as 11,000 litres of wine. Shame if one broke open and we had to rescue the wine..... I did notice one that was a bit bowed, perhaps it's getting ready to pop? We saw several cubbies in the stone walls where thousands of bottles were stored to age. It reminded me of the champagne bottles that we saw stored in a similar way at Tattinger in Reins. We walked past several rows of ...
