Amish Country

We set out at 11ish and drove to Pennsylvania. Annette spotted a former mill she had been to with family before so we stopped and had a look around. They had interesting descriptions and artefacts, and it was a picturesque spot. I spotted a few horse drawn carriages driven by Amish folk on the way for Sunday visits, as is the custom; it is quite a sight, as they dress in traditional garb. If you ...

Bit of a sleep in and breakfast provided this morning. Didn't need to be on the bus until 8am. I told tour guide it was Aofie's 17th Birthday today and we should sing Happy Birthday to her. Livened everyone up a bit more. First stop is Amish Village in Ronks, Lancaster County Pennsylvania. An Amish farm that has been turned into a museum. Had farmhouse, barn, ...

There is no schooling beyond this. Amish do not rely on any government funding ...

This is a Tuesday, before the tourist season, and there was still a crowd waiting to board the train. I can only imagine what it must be like during the summer. We opted to ride in the "open" car. The open car actually has a roof, but no windows. It was the perfect place to ride on ...

Warning – this, and the next few posts, have strong Railroad themes. Mature readers are advised.

This morning it we were leaving Washington DC so we went to Union Station to pick up the car, a Ford focus this time. A bit tense with massive roads 4 lanes wide, impatient drivers who don't use their indicators, emergency vehicles whizzing by and trucks blocking intersections but after half an hour we were onto the main highway and could settle in for ...
