Having fully recovered and had a good nights sleep, especially after the uncomfortable beds at the Hanoi hostel and awkward sleeping on the bus, the second day of our Sapa valley tour was all set. Breakfast was served around 9, some homemade pancakes with banana and honey - not a bad start to the day! The trek was only about 5km so a little more relaxed. We carried on further round the mountain towards a third village, stopping for a very ...

    Sapa (or Sa Pa)

The bus journey to Sapa took about five (well ended up being seven - *explained later) hours, and was relatively comfortable - never going to be the greatest with long legs, nor was the constant beeping or dodgy driving the most relaxing, but I was still pleasantly surprised overall. It's biggest fault was actually when the bus stopped... Having had air con that kept the bus nice and cool, the bus arrived at Sapa around 3am (*) and sat in the bus station for ...

The train journey to Loa Cai is one to be experienced. The second class soft sleepers are so nice and comfortable. A really high standard for Asia. Dont get me wrong the train journey is not smooth, there are many bumps and its quite a loud journey but its a must to experience. The trains leave Hanoi at 9.10pm and arrive at 5.30am. Book your ticket at the train station for 385,000 vnd.

When you arrive in Lo Cai, you can take ...

If you have had enough of the chinese cultures in Jianshui, but have a few more days to spare, you can take a trip out of town to MengZi (蒙自), the next city some 100+ km away to the East.

I decided to come all the way out to the wild outskirts of Mengzi to see the famous but not-frequently-visited BiSeZhai Old ...

    Broken Birthday Bridges

... pains by the end, but I used my medical knowledge to diagnose muscular strain rather that a heart attack.

On the finished side of the bridge, workmen looked at us as if we were aliens, having no idea where we had come from. Mikey told them to hurry up building their bloody bridge and they laughed. They indicated that we could make it to a tiny village 12 miles from Manhao, but couldn’t tell us what happened after that. We could at least see there was another ...
