We crossed the Vietnamese border easily, then took a golf cart - which seem to be commonly used here for shuttle transport - to the Chinese part of the border. We got up, had breakfast in our room (coffee was $6.50 a cup at the restaurant downstairs). Belinda, who always plans ahead, had instant coffee, bread and some apple-pears. We provided chocolate chip cookies. Afterwards we headed for the Nanhu Park where we would meet Stephen and Smile. Nan Hu Park was celebrating a Mum festival with elaborate mum decorations in the shape of elephants, peacocks and other animals.

Joan and I have never been on a train in China, so we were hoping to take a train to Nanning, the capital of Guangxi. It in about 150 miles south. Our plan was to take the train, with Belinda and Lewis, stay overnight and take the train back the next day. The best laid plans of mice and men...
