From Salt Lake City we made it to a stopover in the small town of Elko where we stayed (for the first and only time on our trip) in a motel - The Thunderbird Inn! By the way, the main house had running water and other amenities, including a library and viewing deck; the glass bottles actually let light in (in a kaleidoscopic sort of way).

Well, obviously we survived Arco. We got back on the road again, and yesterday did NOT disappoint!

Craters of the Moon was pretty spectacular. Very desolate, and yet there were signs of tenacious life all over the place: tiny lichens and desert plants popping up all over the place, as long as you looked for them. Volcanic rock everywhere, huge chunks of it - you could just imagine the lava rocks spewing out, molten-hot, thousands of years ago.

... a hot spring that he offers the locals to come to and he does the same for the green tortoise. We parked up on the end of his drive...a very long drive ( never did see his house) and started dinner. Tonight on the menu was red sauce and pasta with salad. After dinner we packed up changed in to out cozzies for the 2 mile hike to the hot springs.... in the virtual dark. by this time it was 8:20 and a lightning some had also started brewing in the distance. we plodded on, eventually coming ...
