We continue to make our way east, next stop the Upper Peninsula of the state of Michigan to the city of Marquette. The population was 21,355 at the 2010 census, making it the most populated city of the UP. Note: the entire UP only has a little over 311,000 residence. Marquette is a major port on Lake Superior, primarily for shipping iron ore (see picture below of train dock), and is the home of Northern Michigan University. In town we saw T- shirts and signs with "Yooper" ...

A road sign near Houghton, MI, referenced a 390" snowfall 35 years ago, and this last winter, they were below this record by just 3"!!! The buffet was well stocked, especially the bacon, and we had an enjoyable breakfast . . . and the coffee cups were kept full by our pleasant server.

Then it was off to see ...

... stop here again!! I took some pictures of the place, then moved on. We first stopped at this restaurant when we took Celeste (our younger daughter) to band camp at Northern Michigan University in Marquette--when she was between her Sophomore and Junior years in high school. And, as I write this she had her 42nd birthday yesterday!!

There are no Tim Horton's in this part of the territory so one has to really rough it with McDonald's Coffee if you need ...

... to their license plate. We happened upon a motel at 10:30 and sign on door said "Night Owls pls ring bell" of which Ray did, low and behold this "republican" chap liked to talk, he even came to our room to show us how to turn on the heat and TV. Thought he would never leave, kind'of unsettling. Little did we realize we had crossed a time change and it was really 11:30 pm. We were up, he had coffee made for us at 7:30 and we were off to St. Ignace Michigan which was 4 hours ...
