... We passed through the locks of the dam during the night and woke to the stop for a chance to walk on the Dam and view the locks up close. Everything looked brand new – although ten years old. They have maintained the dam and the traffic through it well. All very impressive.

I had a hard time understanding, or finally got the reality that so much of China is a façade. Late at night when peeking outside my cabin window I saw massive mother ...

... not fail to impress. It is such a huge project, but at what cost? It's a *******e to come to terms with as China desperately needs to find alternative ways of providing energy, as evidenced by the amount of smog, and the Dam provides electricity for 5% of the country's needs. For the next few hours we cruised down the Yangtze, stopping off at small towns on the way and overtaking all huge tourist ferries which stop off at every historical site. My version had the highlights of seeing the gorges without all the faff or expense. The people on those boats had probably paid a few hundred quid. My hydrofoil ticket had cost about £25.

On the boat I was once again the subject of attention. I had a ton of ...

... part of the itinerary here.

I couldn’t get back to sleep very easily because the shiplock is very tight, so the boat is constantly scraping along the wall, and makes a heck of a noise. I got up for good at 6am and had breakfast at 7am for our last meal on the boat. I think the Chinese people really warmed to us because they actually said "bye" when they left after breakfast. Great!
