Having had breakfast and washed another load of dirty clothes we left them to dry and headed into Whakatane. We went to the iSite (the information centre) to find out if there were any trips to Whale Island which did not involve walking once you got there. There weren't. Heading south, we stopped at the Waitati Gardens. The honor box suggested donation was $7/ adult which we paid. Not worth it. We sat at a garden table to have our morning tea, took a brief stroll, and were on our way. To add insult to injury, my camera battery died, and I didn't have the car charger with me. I used my iPad and iPhone for photos the rest of the day.

... It is such great fun to drive on the roads. The roads are almost empty of other traffic, and the roads are narrow, twisty and you are always going uphill or downhill, never on the flat.
Each significant corner has a speed limit sign ranging from 85 to as little as 15 kilometres an hour. It is so much fun especially when you reach the one lane bridges that you need to negotiate. The other great thing about driving here is that your speed limit in any town is only 50 ...

... authentic looking Japanese sushi place - none of the standard rolls here, these were elaborate and interesting - 3 each chosen and I headed back to Becky who was waiting with the bags, a few moments of silence and we had managed to eat them without making them fall into too many pieces in the process!
