Thoresby Hall Hotel & Spa Nottingham

Stayed here with another couple. Stress that this was a half price break spotted in local newspaper. We livein Notts. so familiar with the place and little travel involved.. Hall is superbly maintained, and sympathetically furnished with furnishings contemporary to the building. The beautiful gardens are also well maintained. We found the food excellent, whilst not offering vast choice or number of courses. The young staff were friendly and helpful. The spa was included in our break, but to pay £50 for actually very little would be very poor value, compared to say Center Parcs, where a far larger and more elaborate spa was £25 when I went only a year or so back. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and are going back at end of January, again on a special offer break. The service we received was excellent, whatever price we had paid, but naturally if you pay the full price, you are far more likely to be critical if things are not quite up to what you expect

The hotel is fantastic, full of history and is so beutiful.

The estate grounds which surround the hotel are superb.

We stayed for three nights and found the room comfortable and clean

The food was great but could be slightly better though but plenty of it.

We will love to come here again soon

Booked the mid week break to finish off after a week in Jersey. We rang ahead and the room was available after 3pm but were welcome to arrive at lunchtime and use any of the facilities. A porter greeted us in the driveway, a very nice touch.

After checking in we went to the information session and booked our evening meals, there are 3 excellent restaurants plus snack bars and lounges. The supplementary prices are not extortionate. The food was well presented by attentive staff. Try the cream teas, to die for.

Scenery and surroundings are gorgeous, lovely views from inside and outside the building. A very sympathetic use of a stately home.

The entertainment and bars really good, there wasnt a disco so we are now taking up ballroom dancing lessons to be able to join the dancing on our next visit.

The only downside was that on outside activities the staff member was perhaps bored, not the first time for him but it was for us.

We only stayed 2 nights, didnt want to leave. Would recommend this to young and old alike.

My husband booked the trip as a birthday treat for me.

We rang ahead to ask what time we could get into our room. We were told anytime after 11am. Arrived at 12.30 to be told room wouldnt be ready until after 3pm.

We killed time and had a Spa experience at a cost of £100 for two of us. Came out of the Spa and went to our room. Reception couldnt find our bags and delayed us going for a snack (we hadnt eaten since breakfast). Arrived at the Bar 4 mins after the deadline for ordering food and we were told that all of the kitchens were closed and we would be unable to get a sandwich anywhere else in the Hotel. One very helpful member of staff suggested we "tried MacDonalds".

The food in all of the restaurants, apart from the A La Carte was absoultely dreadful - can only compare it to a school dinner. We had to pay £80 to get a decent meal whilst we were staying there, even though we had booked half board.

They had a quiz and handed out quiz sheets and then told all of the participants that they didnt have any pens!!

Totally beaurocratic, with no concept of serving individual customer needs, even the most basic ones!!!

Wouldnt recommend it at all, in fact it has totally put me off ever staying in a Hotel in this country. A long weekend cost us over £1000, when you consider the treatments, price of drinks, food which we had to pay for due to terrible quality of the food which was offered!!

Went for a weekend break, within 30 minutes of arrival the real ale ie draught Bass ran out and was not replaced for the rest of the weekend leaving us to drink extremely overpriced Worthington creamflow that tastes like hop flavoured fizzy water. Drinks generally extremely expensive which made you wince whenever you bought 4 drinks. Spa is good but pricey of course and someone stole my swimming gear within 30 minutes of my realising I had left it behind the staff did not exactly bend over backwards to help which left me unable to use the pool area for the rest of the trip. Food was quite good but expensive supplements as usual. Very busy with lots going on eg quizes etc which I don't mind if I can have a decent relaxing drink and chill but this was not possible. I've just discovered this site and I've written about 4 reviews and they tend to be the same ie poor British hotels and shoddy management in Rip off Britain.

After arriving back from the hotel, just an hour ago i felt i had to write a review so other people will know what a wonderful time we had at this lovely place. Every member of staff went out of their way to be friendly whether it be the cleaners, to bar staff or entertainers. The house was kept to an immaculate standard and i couldnt fault it. The grounds were kept magnificent aswell. A wide variety of food to chose from each night whether it be from the bistro or the pierrepont restaurant, never short of something to eat! would definately return to this hotel.... also the spa was great we had some fun in the rhassoul mud treatment room.

We went there expecting a superb spa break, when arriving we found to our dismay that you have to spend £50 for three hours just to use the spa and the treatments were £40 upwards. The staff are all very young, the average age of the guests was 50. The food at the restaurant really let it down, it was all pre-cooked aside from the blue room which is another additional charge. When you have had a an energetic day you need some good food and it was certainly not that. The grounds and the Hall were fantastic, beautiful surroundings having got over the cost of the spa, its actually quite nice. Would not go again there are far better resorts and spas to goto.

Recently visited this wonderful old hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food is great and entertainment was very, very good. The great hall in the old house is lovely and the spa and leisure facilities are second to none.

A fantastic weekend, and we look forward to going again very soon.

Went on a 2 day spa experience break and it was fantastic. The room in the main house was large and all have different layouts. Food was excellent and the staff although young were very friendly and helpful.

we thought it would be idyllic. how much better could it be - a beautiful old house in magic surroundings. we persuaded our friends to join us. it looked as good as we hoped. until we saw the new building stuck on the back.

our son turned up to have dinner with us. a large banner outside said that non residents were welcome. we wanted an early dinner with him. we went down to the lovely restaurant in the old part of the hotel. it was empty. we were told it was not empty and there was no room for our son to eat with us. when we took this up with the manager - that a hotel such as this could not accommodate a guest of two residents- he snubbed us and walked away. we ended up having dinner in a hotel close by who bent over backwards to serve us and make sure the champagne was just the right temperature.

we returned to thoresby hall for a nightcap. but the bar in the old part could not provide us with Baileys, nor did they have any ice. until we made a fuss.

the next day we wanted to sit in the beautiful gardens and have a lunchtime drink. no, they could not serve us with drinks - we had to get our own from the new bar. we saw women guests carrrying trays with four pints of beer. and when we fought our way to the bar through the noisy music, the slot machines and the pub quiz we sat in the concrete garden and dodged the wasps.



when a hotel operates with butlins-like rigidity, and cannot cope with customers who are individuals with individual needs, the standard of the rooms pales into insignificance.

the enjoyment of our weekend was in spite of the stay at thoresby hall. there is more to half board than providing food. feeling wanted and valued as a customer is also a factor. at £130 pound per night i feel we got a raw deal.
